Lynnhurst is a South Minneapolis neighborhood with stately homes

Minnehaha Creek winds through Lynnhurst, a quiet South Minneapolis neighborhood known for its stately homes. In exchange for a higher price point, residents get easy access to Lake Harriet, highly rated schools and community events like the annual Summer Festival. Even though Lynnhurst has such a residential feel, there are a handful of local restaurants along West 50th Street. Downtown Minneapolis is about 5 miles away.

Higher prices get you a historic home in a welcoming community

The Lynnhurst Residential Historic District faces Lake Harriet and includes large Colonial and Tudor Revivals, as well as Prairie-style houses, from the late 1800s and early 1900s. While houses get smaller as you move away from the historic district, you can still find early-1900s homes like Craftsman styles and Foursquares. “Because the homes are so beautiful and the housing stock is so revered and keeping of that area, there aren’t many new construction teardowns, which I love,” says Realtor Andrea Vorachek with Reside. While the winters are cold and snowy, you can find blooming gardens, well-maintained lawns and shaded sidewalks in the warmer months. “You see your neighbors out all the time, taking walks in the evening,” says Vorachek, a former resident. “Kids are out playing in their yards all the time.”

The median single-family home price in Lynnhurst is higher than in Tangletown and East Harriet. “Lynnhurst is probably one of the most expensive neighborhoods in South Minneapolis,” Vorachek says. “It shares that title with Linden Hills.” Prices generally depend on size and condition. Homes that are 2,500 square feet or less cost between the low $300,000s and the mid-$800,000s. Anything larger can range from the mid-$800,000s to over $2.2 million. “Even though Lynnhurst can be a little more expensive, it’s just such a great experience living there that you really get your money’s worth,” Vorachek says. “Most people who buy and live there stay for quite a while, so you really build community and have relationships with your neighbors.”

Locals visit Minnehaha Creek, a neighborhood park and Lake Harriet

Minnehaha Creek runs through the neighborhood. “The creek is great for little kids to go explore,” Vorachek says. “It kind of feels like the 1980s or 1990s, when parents used to turn their kids out to play outside in nature.” A multiuse trail follows the creek on Minnehaha Parkway, which people use for recreation or commuting. You can drop your kayak into the water at Lynnhurst Park, which has amenities like:

  • A playground with sections for older kids and toddlers
  • A recreation center with a gymnasium, craft room and meeting spaces
  • Athletic fields like softball and soccer fields
  • An ice skating rink that is open from December through February
  • A wading pool that’s open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend
At the top of the neighborhood is Lake Harriet, where you can lie out on the beach, walk around the trails or go boating. As you move farther north along the lake, you’ll see the Lake Harriet Bandshell, which hosts events like movie nights and a free concert series. “It is the place to be,” Vorachek says. “You can’t find a parking space or even drive around the lake on Friday or Saturday because of the stuff going on at the bandshell.”

The Tangletown area is friendly and safe. Whenever I leave my home I know that I'll make it home in one piece. That level of security is integral to living a happy life.
