Living in the art district
Holland's reputation as an art district immediately becomes apparent when stepping into the neighborhood— colorful murals and charming architecture are scattered throughout the area, along with coffee shops, bars and restaurants. This Hennepin County neighborhood is split in half by a commuter and freight railroad track, which residents can use to travel to nearby cities. "With this location, you're so close to the city that you can get downtown without even using the highways," says Realtor Taylor Matzoll with Coldwell Banker Realty. Homes start at $200,000 and go up to $450,000.

Shopping and dining in Holland
Holland is sandwiched between two major business districts: University Avenue NE and Central Avenue NE, lined with walkable local restaurants and bars. One unique establishment is Pillar Forum Cafe, a classic neighborhood coffee shop that is also the world's first climate-positive skateboard company. Colorful and inviting, Hai Hai serves modern Vietnamese street food and craft cocktails. This trendy local hotspot is lively and features Southeast Asian décor with large, lush plants. Grumpy's Bar & Grill is a chill tavern offering craft beer and bar food classics. Residents go for a drink and stay for the jukebox and video games. For groceries and other essentials, residents go to the Eastside Food Co-op.

From bungalows to Craftsman
Most homes were built during the 1900s to 1920s, with a mix of single-family and multi-family units. Architectural styles such as Craftsman and bungalows are common. According to Matzoll, the market is considered moderately competitive: "There's been a shift with people moving out to the suburbs, but there will always be people looking for little city communities like this." Prices range from $200,000 to $450,000; the median sell price is around $300,000. Matzoll believes the area is appealing to first-time homebuyers due to its relative affordability. "A large chunk of Holland homes, primarily on the north side, were built for the rail workers around 1920. They are solid little homes that provide opportunities for first-time buyers or buyers on a budget," Matzoll says.

Take classes at Potekglass
"Holland is very well-known for its art studios and public art," Matzoll says. One of these studios is Potekglass, famous for its artisan glass and lighting design. The studio offers classes for beginners looking to learn the fundamentals of glass blowing. There are also advanced classes for those with more prior experience. Both buildings of the Holland Arts campus are also located in the neighborhood, separated by 7th Street NE. What was once the local staple Blackey's Bakery has become Holland Arts East, a transformational space now home to 14 artist studios.
