What the community's single-family homes and duplexes cost

Holland’s mix of living styles gives it a diverse look. Homebuyers can find Craftsman-style and Tudor-influenced homes and bungalows that usually range from the mid-$200,000s to the lower $500,000s. Many of those homes are not part of an HOA. There are also duplexes from the late 1800s and early 1900s that can run from the upper $200,000s to the upper $600,000s. Some buyers treat them as single-family homes, while others rent out half the duplex. Around 60% of residents are renters, who typically live in duplexes or one- to two-bedroom apartments.

What life is like in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District

Holland is one of four neighborhoods that make up the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District, along with Logan Park, Sheridan and Bottineau. The area is known for its arts studios, dining scene and friendly atmosphere, and it attracts all kinds of residents. “It’s very desirable for young professionals who want an urban lifestyle and a mixed demographic,” says Mary Jo Quay, a Realtor with Epique Realty. Residents can generally walk where they need to go thanks to the area’s grid-like streets, but biking is also an option. 22nd Avenue NE is a bike boulevard with speed humps that slow traffic, and Central Avenue has dedicated bike lanes. Some homes have short driveways, but people often park their cars in the street. A set of freight train tracks cut through the neighborhood, but people generally aren’t bothered by the noise.

Art is part of the neighborhood's daily life

The artists who live in and around Holland have opened several galleries and studios. Potekglass offers stained glass classes and sells original pieces. Holland Arts has two buildings in the neighborhood that together house 35 artist studios, and the East building has a public gallery of the artists’ work. Just outside the community, The Casket Arts Community oversees three studios and the NE Sculpture Gallery, which hosts exhibitions from several artists.

Events are held throughout the year, but the biggest celebration is Art-A-Whirl, a studio tour that takes over the entire Arts District for three days each May. More than 1,600 artists and businesses join in on the fun, and the streets are filled with live music and family-friendly activities. “It’s imitative of New York [City] in the 1980s,” Quay says of the neighborhood’s art events. “They’re fun, and you always see something, and you can talk to everybody.”

Renowned restaurants border the area

Popular dining districts along University Avenue Northeast and Central Avenue Northeast border the neighborhood. “You won’t find chain anything … they like it personalized,” Quay says. “There’s no Starbucks within 2 miles. They just won’t do it.” Restaurants in those districts include:

  • Hai Hai, a Southeast Asian street-style eatery
  • Jax Cafe, a steak and seafood spot that opened in 1933
  • Holy Land, which serves Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes
  • Francis Burger Joint, a vegan restaurant that puts a spin on American classics
  • Chimborazo, known for Ecuadorian cuisine and its weekend brunch

Commute downtown for work or see a football game

Holland is less than 5 miles from Downtown West, where people can check out several concert venues, and Downtown East, where they can catch a Minnesota Vikings football game at U.S. Bank Stadium. It’s around a 15-minute drive to downtown in normal traffic. Residents don’t have to own a car thanks to several Metro Transit bus stops in the neighborhood. Buses can often get downtown in 25-35 minutes. The University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus is about 15 minutes away by car, or roughly 45 minutes by bus.

Kids can attend the Minneapolis Public School District

Students attend the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District, with Thomas Edison High School sitting in the neighborhood. Minnesota’s open enrollment allows students to attend any school outside of their district that has space. There are also citywide magnet schools, such as the FAIR School for Arts, which uses a lottery-style enrollment process. The private Saint John Paul II Catholic School, for kindergarten through eighth grade, is just outside the area.

Regional parks have sports fields and views of the city

There are plenty of nearby parks where people can spend time outside. Jackson Square Park has sports courts, a playground and a wading pool, and Bottineau Field Park’s skate zone is a highlight. For views of the Mississippi River and the city skyline, you can make the roughly 2-mile trip to Boom Island Park, which has biking and jogging paths and a boat dock.
