Kingfield has local spots and community spirit in South Minneapolis

Kingfield is a vibrant community in the heart of South Minneapolis, with walkable streets and lots of local restaurants. You can find something for every occasion, from casual burger joints to a fine-dining experience at a James Beard Award-winning restaurant. Beyond its small businesses, the area is known for its community spirit, supported by the Kingfield Neighborhood Association. The area is very walkable, but major roads, public transit and bike trails make it easy to reach the rest of the city.

Local shops and restaurants on every street

Part of what makes Kingfield so unique is the sheer number of dining options. “No matter where you are in Kingfield, you are bordered by streets that have lots of options for restaurants and coffee shops,” says Realtor Aaron Eisenberg with Keller Williams Realty Integrity Lakes, who is also a resident and KFNA board member. Here’s a taste of what’s available:

  • Pastisserie 46, a French-inspired bakery
  • Five Watt Coffee, a neighborhood favorite known for its lattes and coffee
  • Victor’s 1959 Café, a Cuban restaurant that’s been open for nearly 30 years
  • The Lowbrow, a popular spot for burgers and brunch
  • Bûcheron, a James Beard Award-winning restaurant
There are also plenty of local shops, ranging from The Record Spot, which has a huge collection of used vinyl records, to the neighborhood Ace Hardware. “Any homeowner can appreciate the close proximity of a quality hardware store,” says longtime resident and KFNA board member Robert Roedl.

Homes cost less than Tangletown, but move off the market faster

Eisenberg describes Kingfield as a "Goldilocks" neighborhood, because “it can work for anybody. If you want to rent, there are places to rent. If you want to raise a family there, you can raise a family there. You get everything you’d want from a city house.” Most homes were built between the 1910s and 1930s, including Craftsman styles, bungalows and Foursquares. “Some parts of Kingfield are much more elaborate and have larger yards,” Roedl says. “And then other parts get more and more modest... They’ll have nice wooden details built in, but it won’t be ornate.” You can also find duplexes, townhouses and condos.

Prices generally range from the low $300,000s to the low $800,000s, while townhouses and condos cost between the low $100,000s and the mid-$300,000s. The median single-family home price is lower than in Tangletown and Lynnhurst, but Eisenberg says demand is higher. Homes move off the market in about 20 days, much faster than the national average.

MLK Park is a community hub and home to the Kingfield Farmers Market

Kingfield is minutes away from the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Regional Park, a network of parks with trails, lakes like Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet and the Lyndale Park Gardens. You also have Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in the neighborhood. “MLK Park is constantly busy,” says Dani Burford, another resident and KFNA board member. “There are always families there, always people playing basketball or volleyball.” Besides using the athletic fields, you can:

  • Bring your kids to the playground
  • Visit the wading pool in the summer
  • Play doubles at the Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center
  • Walk your dog around the walking path
  • Join an art class at the recreation center
The Kingfield Farmers Market sets up at the park every Sunday morning from mid-May through October. It has become one of the city’s most popular markets, with close to 40 vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables. “Everyone gets really excited about it,” Burford says. “Even people outside of Kingfield come.”

Neighbors come together for community events like Kingfield Porch Fest

While Kingfield’s walkability and local businesses are why people move here, the community is why they stay. “It’s the kind of place where kids are still walking across the street to the park by themselves,” Burford says. “On Halloween, the street behind us closes so that kids can trick-or-treat freely and run back and forth.” The Kingfield Neighborhood Association hosts several events throughout the year, offering opportunities for people to come together. Standouts include Kingfield Empty Bowls, a fundraiser for a local nonprofit, and the Kingfield Porch Fest, where dozens of musicians perform free concerts from the porches of over 50 homes. Whether it’s showing up for these events or shoveling sidewalks, Roedl says, “It’s a community where everybody cares about the community.”

Students can attend the highly rated Washburn High School

Kingfield is part of the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District and is zoned for Washburn High School, a highly rated school with the International Baccalaureate program. School choice is available through intradistrict transfer applications and citywide magnet schools, which use a lottery system to determine enrollment.

When not walking, residents bike, drive or take the bus

Besides being walkable, Kingfield is very bike-friendly. Cyclists can hop onto the Bryant Avenue bike lane for an easy ride across the city. If you’d prefer to drive, you can take main drags like Nicollet and Lyndale avenues or Interstate 35 West to reach downtown Minneapolis, which is less than 5 miles (11 minutes) away. It’s about 15 miles (20 minutes) to downtown Saint Paul. Metro Transit buses also stop in the neighborhood.

I love my neighborhood. It is mostly quiet, there's a lake, trails, and many parks. It's also becoming more racially diverse and people are taking action during this time of change in our country. People come together in the form of block parties and neighborhood watches at night. Speaking of night, there isn't much to do in the form of nightlife. We have to travel to Uptown or Downtown which isn't too far away. There are a few great coffee shops and little cafes which make is nice to have a chill day.

Access to many bus lines, including freeway/express buses, large number of small businesses, including coffee shops, restaurants, vintage stores and antique stores. There are lots of parks, including Martin Luther King Park, which recently redid the playground area.
