What homeowners often pay for Victorian and Tudor-style mansions

Lowry Hill is "one of Minneapolis’ most established and architecturally significant neighborhoods,” says Jessica Prudden, a cofounder and broker at Prudden & Company. The community is known for having large Victorian and Tudor-style mansions, but there are also Colonial Revivals, American Foursquares and Craftsman-style houses, as well as a handful of townhomes. Prices can range from the lower $500,000s to more than $2.5 million. Duplexes often go from the mid-$300,000s to around $1 million, and modern condos can run from about $90,000 to the mid-$400,000s, with HOA fees typically between $230 and $1,015 per month. The community tends to be more expensive than surrounding areas like Loring Park and Bryn Mawr, but less expensive than in nearby Kenwood. Close to 65% of residents are renters, who usually live in apartments and condos.

The area has steep streets and an active community

Lowry Hill sits on top of an actual hill, and some roads, like Mount Curve and Fremont avenues, have a noticeable incline. The community’s wide streets and sidewalks are shaded by tall trees, whose leaves change color with the seasons. The Lowry Hill Neighborhood Association brings people together through events like Pools On, which kicks off the summer season with free refreshments and a rubber duck race through the seven pools at Thomas Lowry Park. The organization also shares information and news that affects residents.

Easy access to the rest of the city

The neighborhood is around 2 miles from Downtown West, where national companies like Target and U.S. Bank have their headquarters. It’s also where the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx basketball teams play, at the Target Center. The commute often takes around 10 minutes by car. Residents can also get there via Metro Transit buses, which make stops along Hennepin Avenue. Bus rides downtown usually take between 25 and 40 minutes, depending on the route. People can also walk there by taking Vineland Place and cutting through nearby Loring Park to get to Loring Greenway.

Downtown is not the only part of the city that residents can easily reach from Lowry Hill. “You can get on Interstate 94 and get to the airport really easily,” Prudden says. “You can get on Interstate 394 to go west to the suburbs. … It’s a central hub for people if they have to travel or drive somewhere for their job.”

Students are zoned for the Minneapolis Public School District

Students are served by the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District. Minnesota’s open-enrollment policy allows students to attend any school outside the district, as long as the school is not at capacity. There are also citywide magnet schools that use a lottery to determine enrollment. Private schools like The Blake School, which is in the neighborhood, are another option.

People can hit the lake or explore the Walker Art Center

The neighborhood borders Lake of the Isles, part of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, and you can head there for biking, jogging, fishing and canoeing. “I walk the trails around Lake of the Isles pretty much every day. … It’s just a beautiful thing,” Prudden says. People can play baseball, softball, soccer and football at Parade Park or try hockey and ice skating at Parade Ice Garden. Thomas Lowry Park is a smaller space with a brick walking path and seven small pools. It often hosts special events like weddings.

The community’s Walker Art Center is a hub for contemporary art, including exhibitions, live performances and film screenings. It also oversees and overlooks the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, an 11-acre space that has more than 60 pieces. You can walk from the garden to Loring Park on the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge. The park offers a community garden, a fishing pier, a pet area and shuffleboard and horseshoe courts, among other things.
