Lyndale is a walkable, tight-knit community with plenty to do

Near the heart of South Minneapolis is Lyndale, a walkable neighborhood surrounded by shops, restaurants and outdoor recreation. The area has a charming atmosphere that comes from its older homes as much as it does from its local businesses and strong sense of community. LynLake, one of Uptown’s busiest restaurant districts, starts in the neighborhood, and residents are a short walk from the Chain of Lakes. While most people walk or bike, highway access makes driving easy. Downtown Minneapolis is less than 5 miles away.

Older homes create a charming atmosphere with lower prices

Most of Lyndale’s homes were built in the early 1900s, including Foursquares, Craftsman styles, bungalows and workers cottages. “They have that classic South Minneapolis feel,” says Realtor CJ Norman with Norman Homes at Pemberton Real Estate, a former resident who has worked in the area for over seven years. “A lot of the homes have older charm, front porches, hardwood floors, original woodwork and tree-lined streets. It’s not a cookie-cutter neighborhood, which is a big part of the appeal.” Many of these properties have been renovated with updated appliances, and some have been turned into duplexes. There are also apartment and condo buildings built from the 1910s to the early 2000s.

Even with nearly 80% of residents renting, there are plenty of options for owning. The median single-family home price is lower in Lyndale than in South Uptown, with prices ranging from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$700,000s. “Lyndale usually sits in a similar conversation as Kingfield and South Uptown because buyers are often drawn to the same things: older homes, walkability, restaurants, bike access and proximity to the lakes,” Norman says. “Compared to Kingfield, Lyndale feels a little more energetic and connected to some of the busier parts of South Minneapolis like Eat Street and LynLake, while Kingfield often feels a bit quieter and more residential.” Condos generally cost between the low $100,000s and the high $200,000s.

LynLake and Eat Street mean countless restaurants are nearby

“Lyndale is special in that it has such a vibrant small business community,” says Sami Smetana, executive director of the Lyndale Neighborhood Association. Many of these shops and restaurants are in the LynLake district, where you can:

  • Order Detroit-style pizza from Wrecktangle Pizza
  • Play retro games while you have a beer at Up-Down
  • Try food from all over the globe at World Street Kitchen
  • Enjoy a speakeasy atmosphere at Volstead’s Emporium
  • Grab an ice cream from Milkjam Creamery
You’re also minutes from Eat Street in Whittier, which is “a really well-known stretch of Nicollet Avenue with an eclectic mix of restaurants, coffee shops, casual spots and different types of food,” Norman says. “Lyndale is a very easy neighborhood to live in if you like being able to grab coffee, dinner, drinks or something low-key without going far.” After dinner, you can catch a movie or bowl at Bryant Lake Bowl and Theater. Every fall, the neighborhood association hands out Swigs & Swags passports, which have coupons for businesses in Lyndale, Whittier and Kingfield.

Nearby lakes, neighborhood parks and the local Y offer recreation

Lyndale is minutes from Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet, and Norman says that locals are always heading that way, “especially when the weather is nice. There is a ton of activity going on daily, with people walking, biking, running, rollerblading, paddleboarding...just getting outside.” Closer to home, residents can head to Painter Park, where amenities include:

  • A playground with a space for toddlers and older kids
  • Athletic fields for soccer and softball
  • A basketball court where you can practice your free throw
  • A recreation center with after-school programs
Besides the recreation center, residents can take advantage of the Blaisdell YMCA, which has a gym, pool and community-building programs. The neighborhood association manages two fee-based community gardens, one on Pleasant Avenue and the other on Pillsbury Avenue. “We think about our work in three core areas, community building, business support and adult education,” Smetana says. The gardens fall under community building, alongside events like the Lyndale Book Fest, a free book exchange.

People bike, walk, drive and ride the bus

With major roads like Lake Street and Lyndale Avenue in the neighborhood, and Interstate 35 West nearby, residents are well connected to the rest of Minneapolis. “People bike a lot,” Norman says. “They walk. They use transit. And if you drive, it’s pretty easy to get downtown, Uptown or over to the lakes. It’s one of those neighborhoods where you don’t feel like you have to get in the car for most things.” Downtown Minneapolis is less than 5 miles (15 minutes) away, and downtown Saint Paul is 15 miles (20 minutes) away. Metro Transit buses stop in the community.

To me personally, I feel this area is the best fit for me because I don't usually drive and everything that I need is nearby. But one thing I am not happy with is the shootings that happens frequently. Two days ago, an adult was shot on the forehead but no action was taken. Sometimes, I feel so scared when I am walking down the streets because young adults have guns with them and if they request something from you, and you deny, the action is that they will shoot you or even threaten you. The security is the issue in this area.
