Central puts residents near restaurants, parks and downtown

Central is near the heart of south Minneapolis, offering residents access to downtown and the rest of the city via Interstate 35W. People often live in Craftsman- and prairie-style homes and duplexes, and students are zoned for a highly rated district. The neighborhood is close to East Lake Street, a commercial district filled with international eateries and shops, as well as green spaces like Powderhorn Park.

What people often pay for the area's homes, duplexes and condos

Craftsman-style bungalows and prairie-style homes can be found throughout the neighborhood. Single-family homes often range from the lower $100,000s to the upper $500,000s, and duplexes can run from the upper $200,000s to the upper $400,000s. The handful of condos in the area typically sell between the mid- and upper $100,000s, with HOA fees usually around $400. More than half of residents are renters, who are split between apartments and homes. The area’s prices are roughly in line with prices in surrounding neighborhoods like Powderhorn Park, Bryant and Lyndale.

A tight-knit community with a suburban feel

Area streets are lined with tall trees that change color with the seasons, and sidewalks are well-maintained. Large walls block Interstate 35W from view while maintaining highway access. People can still drive or walk across the interstate into Lyndale and Kingfield via bridges along East 35th, 36th and 38th streets. The Central Area Neighborhood and Development Organization, or CANDO, supports residents by providing financial resources and sharing news that affects the community. “People are fiercely loyal neighbors to one another,” says Brandon Meland, a Realtor with The Duluth Team of Coldwell Banker Realty.

People can quickly get downtown by car or by bus

Residents can access Interstate 35W from 2nd Avenue South. The neighborhood is around 3 miles from downtown Minneapolis, where people often commute to work at national companies like Target. Visitors can also catch a show at the State Theatre or watch a Minnesota Vikings game at U.S. Bank Stadium. The drive takes just over 5 minutes via I-35W and state Highway 65. Metro Transit buses make several stops in the area and can get riders downtown in 25-40 minutes, depending on the line. Biking is also an option, as streets like Park Avenue have designated bike lanes.

Students are zoned for the Minneapolis Public School District

Students are served by the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District, including Green Central Elementary School, a dual-language option in the neighborhood. Students can also attend any school outside the district that has space available, under the state’s open-enrollment policy. Citywide magnet schools, like Sullivan STEAM School, use lotteries to determine enrollment.

There are many restaurants within a few miles

Many of Central’s dining options are found on East Lake Street, an international commercial hub that stretches almost 4 miles. Spots along the street include Pineda Tacos Plus, a counter-service eatery with authentic Mexican entrees, and the Midtown Global Market, which houses several vendors selling food from across the world. Away from East Lake Street are spots like Jakeeno’s Pizza & Pasta, which has served the community since 1975. Across Interstate 35W is Hola Arepa, a popular spot known for its Venezuelan-style arepas and cocktails. Food lovers looking for a bite of history can head about a mile away to Matt’s Bar, home of the cheese-stuffed Jucy Lucy burger, a regional phenomenon. “You’ve got to go for yourself,” Meland says. “It’s a good burger.”

Central Minneapolis is great... if you're into drive-by's, prostitution, and really loud Spanish music (with a blown speaker, of course) access to 35w is nice though, and it's cheap af.
