Minneapolis’ oldest neighborhood

Resting on a bluff along the Mississippi River, next to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, is Marcy-Holmes, the oldest neighborhood in Minneapolis. Referred to as “Old Town” by some, Marcy-Holmes is synonymous with skyline views, riverside trails, the college-town hype of Dinkytown and easy access to Interstate 35W. A fusion of 19th-century homes and converted industrial buildings gives this neighborhood its distinct look and feel. “There is a lot to love,” says Kendall Murphy, the community engagement coordinator with MSP Film Society. “It’s a very walkable part of Minneapolis with a mixture of casual places to eat and more formal dining spots, plus lots of quirky boutiques, vintage resale stores and, of course, the film society.”

Vintage shopping and the awaited return of Annie’s Parlour

Locally owned boutiques and eateries dot the neighborhood. The racks and shelves at Golden Pearl Vintage feature clothing and accessories from the 1920s through the 1990s. Alma draws in diners for its modern twists on American cuisine. Vegetarians leave with full bellies at Stray Dog, a spot that Murphy says she visits regularly for lunch. “One side of the menu is burgers and hot dogs, and when you flip it, it’s the same, but all items are vegetarian,” she says. Minneapolis Cider Company and HeadFlyer Brewing are the neighborhood watering holes. Down in Dinkytown, the commercial district and college student haunt, longtime residents are thrilled about the return of family-owned Annie's Parlour. “It’s been closed for a number of years. It was THE malt and hamburger place. We are all so excited,” says Kristen Eide-Tollefson, who has owned The Book House in Dinkytown for nearly 50 years. Nearby grocery options include Target and Lunds & Byerlys.

Dinkytown is the center of nightlife

Marcy-Holmes comes alive at night, especially in Dinkytown, a vibrant destination for bars and live music. Adjacent to the University of Minnesota, college students have been defining the area for generations. “We’ve had a great deal of development in Dinkytown. It has shifted to an entertainment district,” Eide-Tollefson says. “It’s a cultural crossroads. It’s the students and their memories. It’s been a part of major movements and is most famously where Bob Dylan became Bob Dylan,” she says.

Tudor Revival and Victorian homes on quiet interior streets

While most residents are renters living in historic industrial buildings converted into apartments, there are opportunities to buy here. In the calmer core of Marcy-Holmes, single-family homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s fill peaceful residential blocks, with duplexes and triplexes sprinkled in between. Tudor Revival, Queen Anne, Victorian and Prairie-style homes sit along streets shaded by mature oak and ash trees. Sidewalks and the occasional driveway frame minimally landscaped lots around 1/10 acre. Houses range from $275,000 to more than $500,000. Condos cost between $114,000 and $500,000, but luxury high-rise units start above $700,000 and can top $1.5 million.

Greenspace featuring views of St. Anothy Falls

Several neighborhood parks feature walking and biking trails along the Mississippi River. The wide, paved multi-use paths at Historic Main Street Park offer street-level views of the downtown skyline. The Lower Trail leads to Father Hennepin Bluff Park, where hikers can experience the Mississippi Gorge up close. The Stone Arch Bridge, which can only be crossed on foot or by bike, passes by Saint Anthony Falls, a historic landmark tied to the neighborhood’s beginnings. The bridge is closed through Spring 2025 for preservation work. A few blocks from the river, Holmes Park offers open green space, tennis and basketball courts and a playground. Northeast Park and Recreation Center is about 2 miles away for team sports and fitness classes. In the summer, the Jim Lupient Water Park next door is a popular spot to cool off. Five golf courses are less than 5 miles from the neighborhood, including the public 18-hole course at the University of Minnesota.

Cultivating creativity at Marcy Arts Elementary

Marcy-Holmes hosts one of the district’s magnet elementary schools, Marcy Arts Elementary. The school, which earns a C-plus rating from Niche, partners with the University of Minnesota and professional artists to offer visual arts, music, theatre and dance training. Some seasons will bring many thunderstorms and tornados to the midwest, but in comparison to the costal areas or cities that are earthquake prone, thunderstorms seem much less frightening and more manageable.

Minnesotans love being outdoors, and this is most visible when it's sunny outside. There are runners and bikers along the river trails, people walking their dogs, and old couples sitting on the park benches. The gyms too are frequently busy (at the U of MN and downtown Lifetime Fitness). Although obesity is becoming an issue here as it is other places, it doesn't seem like it has taken hold as quickly.

Crime in the area has spiked as the campus has transitioned from being a commuter campus to being a residential campus. The Marcy Park neighborhood has poor lighting and does not have high public transportation traffic through the area. Other areas of campus are much safer.

There is a lot of congestion with students walking and biking all over the place, cars trying to get through, buses racing to be on time, and the occasional light rail going through it all. It's not bad, but it can get annoying. That said, if you avoid rush hour, most of the day traffic flows smoothly. On and around campus there is little free parking, but in Dinkytown almost all streets are permit-free. It's also easy to get around by walking, the farthest distance between two point of interest would be about 1.5 miles.
