Artists opt for this riverside community
Hundreds of herons nest on a small island in the Mississippi off the shore of Marshall Terrace each spring. This natural wonder inspires awe in all who visit and is especially fruitful to the neighborhood's resident artists. Northeast Minneapolis is the city's arts district, with a high concentration of studios and home to the country's largest open studio tour. "Northeast Minneapolis has had a renaissance in the past 10 years," says local Realtor Joel Friday. "People saw the cheaper housing and went in and bought it and renovated the bars and nightclubs and stuff. They did a really nice job." Though Marshall Terrace is primarily industrial, local creatives move here because of its location. "Many of the residents in the neighborhood choose to live here because of how close it is to their community and their studios," says Vice Chair of the Marshall Terrace Neighborhood Organization Ryan Whitaker. "We even have a few studios in Marshall Terrace too."

Brunch, brews and the Eastside Food Co-op
Despite being primarily industrial and residential, Marshall Terrace has a few local restaurants in the neighborhood. "The Buttered Tin is great," Whitaker says. "They have amazing baked goods." Menu highlights at this brunch spot include their big-as-the-plate cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting and their specialty biscuits and gravy. The north end of the neighborhood's 56 Brewing has a large patio where they host food trucks, live music and trivia nights. "It's pretty scenic, especially in the summer, to go there and look over the garden and enjoy a few beers," Whitaker says. Residents can get groceries a mile away at the family-owned Sentyrz Liquor & Supermarket or two miles away at the Eastside Food Co-op, a community-owned grocery store. Retail shopping awaits three miles away at The Quarry. This strip mall houses retailers like Target, PetSmart and The Home Depot.

Art-A-Whirl celebrates local artists each spring
Each spring, creatives from across the Twin Cities gather in Northeast Minneapolis for Art-A-Whirl. This annual art festival is known to be the country's largest open studio tour. Local artists across Northeast Minneapolis open their studios to the public to showcase their work, bands play outside and food trucks fill the streets for three days of creative expression and community building. Interactive experiences are a huge part of this festival: visitors can take free classes from professionals to learn skills like pottery, jewelry making and glassblowing. Other artists instead put on live demonstrations to showcase skills like painting, woodworking and printmaking.

Demand increases for housing in Marshall Terrace
Marshall Terrace has a charming mix of early- and mid-20th-century homes, including bungalows and American Foursquares. Single-family homes and duplexes are common in the neighborhood. "There have been some new developments as well," Whitaker says. "Two doors down from me is a brand-new home that was built on an empty lot." Houses in Marshall Terrace often take up most of their lot, but many expand their outdoor space by having a screened-in porch at the front. The neighborhood has a competitive housing market, with sales occurring after an average of 17 days on the market. "It's definitely going up in price," Whitaker says. "Northeast, in general, has become really popular over the last 10 to 15 years. Most homes going up for sale sell very quickly, and they're usually in the $300,000-plus range."

Spot herons from Marshall Terrace Park
Hugging the banks of the Mississippi, Marshall Terrace has well-tended public green space and easy access to the river. Marshall Terrace Park is a quiet riverfront neighborhood park with two large playgrounds and a wading pool. "Right across from the park in the middle of the river, there's a small island that is actually a bird estuary," Whitaker says. "We have a lot of migratory birds that will come through there, so that park is becoming really popular for bird watchers."

Ten minutes from downtown Minneapolis

"River Road leads right downtown, or a bus would get you there in 15 minutes or so." There are bike lanes on the streets, along the river and across the major bridges at Plymouth Avenue and Broadway Street. The closest hospital, North Memorial Health, is three miles away. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is 16 miles away.

Noise warning for Northtown Yard
BNSF Railway's Northtown Yard occupies the neighborhood's northeast corner, but many don't mind the noise. "My house is directly in front of the train yard, separated by an alleyway, and you get used to it. I don't mind it at all," Whitaker says. I have a hard time sleeping elsewhere if it's too quiet now."
