Residential area features an international market

The Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis is a bustling community of established residential streets and a dynamic international marketplace. Although Lake Street is a major commercial corridor with restaurants featuring global cuisine, much of the community consists of single-family homes. Living in Phillips offers a dynamic mix of urban convenience and community charm. Bustling with cafes, independent shops and a thriving arts scene, Phillips exudes a welcoming atmosphere. Many residents are drawn to Phillips' lively energy. “There are tons of reasons for residents to come together as a community here,” says Joel Huntington, a Realtor with Keller Williams. “The international marketplace is one of the biggest draws and opportunities to come together regularly.”

Two-story homes from the 1900s

Residential streets feature two-story houses from the early 1900s, many with Craftsman details, Foursquare and Victorian homes. There are also duplexes and condos. Grand Victorian houses adorned with turrets, gingerbread trim and wraparound porches line neighborhood streets. The architectural gems, primarily built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are reminiscent of when lumber barons and industrialists called this corner of the city home. Expect to find Queen Anne-type styles dominating the scene, with their intricate detailing, bay windows and varied rooflines adding a touch of whimsy to the streetscape. Houses here range from about $200,000 to over $500,000.

Minneapolis neighborhood’s global flavor

In 2006, the Phillips community came together to create Midtown Global Market, a popular international market with over 40 stalls in the former Sears building on Lake Street. Small businesses offer apparel and grocery items from around the world, and musical performances and other special events often take place on the weekends. Be sure to stop by the food court to sample sushi at Intown Sushi, Venezuelan cuisine at the Arepa Bar and other local favorites.
