People in the community tend to be supportive of one another, and organizations often plan events to help residents come together. It’s easy to drive downtown from the neighborhood or take the bus.

What single-family homes and duplexes cost in the neighborhood
Roughly 70% of residents are renters, who largely live in apartments and duplexes. Homeowners tend to have a mix of Victorian and Craftsman-style single-family homes and duplexes, which often range from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$400,000s. There are also modern condos that can run from the lower $100,000s to the lower $300,000s, though some luxury units can reach the upper $500,000s. HOA fees are usually between $450 and $950 per month. The community’s prices are generally higher than in neighboring Phillips West, but lower than in Powderhorn Park.

Life is bustling in Phillips
In comparison to more residential neighborhoods in southern Minneapolis, like Bryant, Phillips is “more dynamic,” says Greta Fay, a Realtor with Anderson Realty. “There’s a major hospital there. You have great access to downtown … There are lots of vibrant communities and great food, and there’s more flexibility with houses.” Residents can walk to most of the area’s happenings. Streets are wide, and people often park along the curb. Driving through the area is generally quick, but Fay says East Lake Street, a major commercial hub, can be slow. “There are a lot of stoplights, and people are going in all directions,” Fay says. Biking is also popular, and 17th Avenue South is a designated bike boulevard that runs north-south through the area.
Community organizations and hospitals support residents
The Lake Street Safety Center is tucked into the neighborhood’s southeast corner. It's a hub for safety coordinators, crime prevention specialists and other community organizations. The United Phillips group helps with neighborhood upkeep and brings people together through events like monthly potluck dinners. People can learn about gardening at the East Phillips Community Garden, which grows berries and other fruits. The Alley is a neighborhood newspaper that focuses exclusively on community issues. It also hosts various workshops and forums for residents. Abbott Northwest Hospital and Children’s Minnesota - Minneapolis Hospital serve the community when emergencies arise.

People commute downtown in several ways
It’s easy to walk places along the neighborhood’s grid-like streets, though most people will drive if they’re making the roughly 2-mile commute to Downtown West's business district. The trip takes about 10 minutes. Residents can ride Metro Transit buses, which make several stops in the neighborhood along major roads like Chicago Avenue, to get downtown in 25-30 minutes. There’s also a light rail option, which can get riders there in closer to 20 minutes.
The Midtown Global Market attracts visitors from across the city.
You can try the Midtown Global Market and other international eateries
The Phillips food scene centers around the Midtown Global Market, where close to 15 stalls house eateries serving dishes from around the world. The market often hosts live music and has holiday celebrations. Other international spots are found on East Lake Street, including Las Cuatro Milpas, a popular place for birria-style street tacos. Residents are not limited to what’s in the neighborhood. You can walk to try East African food at Mama Safia’s Kitchen in Phillips West. In nearby Ventura Village, Maria’s Cafe is known for its Colombian-style breakfast. “It has great pancakes, and it kind of feels like you’re in the heart of a community,” Fay says. Mercado Central does for shopping and businesses what Midtown Global Market does for restaurants, bringing lots of different cultures together.
Stewart Park has things to do all year long.
People can spend a day at nearby parks
There are several green spaces within a few miles of the neighborhood. People can spend a day at:
Stewart Park, which has sports fields, a playground and a gym
East Phillips Park, where youth and adult soccer leagues play games
Peavey Field Park, which has lighted basketball courts and a picnic pavilion
Powderhorn Park, popular for fishing in the summer and ice skating in the winter
The area is zoned for the Minneapolis Public School District
Students are served by the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District, including South Senior High School, which also gets high marks. But students can attend any school outside of their district that is not full, thanks to the state’s open enrollment policy. Magnet schools like Marcy Arts Elementary School, in Marcy-Holmes, use a lottery to determine enrollment. The nearby Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is a highly rated private option.
