Small-town vibes just outside downtown Minneapolis
One of the oldest neighborhoods in Minneapolis, Seward honors its railroad roots with an independent spirit. Tucked in along the western bank of the Mississippi River, just southeast of the Minneapolis city center, Seward’s physical borders of Hiawatha Avenue, Interstate 94 and the Midtown Greenway help create a small-town vibe despite the neighborhood being so close to downtown. “It has a great little intimate and hip feel,” says Julie Glass, a Realtor with Edina Realty Inc., who’s lived in Minneapolis for 30 years. “The number one appeal is over 50% of the neighborhood is surrounded by biking and walking trails. Plus, there’s unique little restaurants,” Glass says. Home buyers here will find revitalized late 19th-century homes for as low as $200,000 to upwards of $650,000.

Late-1800s homes in Victorian and prairie styles
With few new builds, the home and building styles here are reflective of the area’s late 19th-century development. On the riverfront, buyers will find stucco and stone bungalows, earth-toned prairie styles and Craftsman cottages on lush and landscaped yards with tall mature oak trees. Further inland, minimal traditional styles and Victorian homes sit on cozy and compact streets shaded by trees and lined with sidewalks. There are also rare opportunities to buy colorful brick homes, originally built for railroad workers in the 1870s, along the historic Milwaukee Avenue. It’s one of the few pedestrian-only avenues in the city. With varying styles and home conditions, prices range from as low as $180,000 to more than $650,000 with buyers paying $309,000 on average.

Community-focused restaurants and stores
Most of the restaurants in the area are locally owned. Corner restaurant Café Racer Kitchen serves Latin American tapas, brunch and dinner in its cozy yet modern digs. The restaurant gives back to the community through “Break Bread Free Meals,” providing food to those who cannot pay. More dining options line East Franklin Avenue, such as Pizza Lucé, known for its award-winning and adventurous pies made with local ingredients, and Rebecca’s Bakery & Café. “Rebecca’s is run by a Somali family of trained bakers and pastry chefs. It’s a wonderful place for baked goods and sandwiches,” says Ron Schlatter, who’s lived in Seward for 35 years. For basic goods and groceries, locals head to Seward Community Co-op or the Minnehaha Center with chains like Cub and Target.

A neighborhood garage sale no one wants to miss
Every year the community holds Seward Yard Sale Days in May, drawing people from across the metro into the neighborhood hoping for good finds. “It goes back years and years. People put it on their calendars and the Seward Neighborhood Group (SNG) puts a map together, so people know where to go,” says Schlatter, who’s also the treasurer on the board of directors for the SNG.

Places for humans and dogs to play
Living in Seward comes with no shortage of natural space. This neighborhood's heart is Matthews Park and Recreation Center, featuring athletic fields separated by paved walking paths shaded by oak, ash and pine trees. In addition to the playground, kids can dip in the wading pool in the warmer months or sledding down the big hill after a snowfall. Over at Merwyn Triangle Park, children can climb on the interactive sculpture of the park's namesake: the fantastical creature of Merwyn. Near the banks of the Mississippi, dog owners visit Franklin Terrace Off-Leash Dog Park, where their four-legged friends can run leash-free over an acre of fenced-in space.
