A rustic community on the edge of Chicagoland
Surrounded by farmlands and suburbia, Minooka is where rural meets the suburban. Just southwest of Joliet, this community of almost 13,000 people wears its agricultural roots on its sleeve — right down to the row of empty grain silos in the center of town. However, Chicagoland's reach grows every year and Minooka isn’t immune to it, gaining over 10,000 residents since 1990. “When I was a kid, it was about 300 people,” says Minooka Mayor Ric Offerman. “Chicago built out, and it finally got to us. But there are still plenty of farms to the west.” As a result, Minooka aims to maintain its rustic roots while offering modern amenities. This, combined with a lower cost of living and highly ranked schools, continues to attract new residents.
Outside of positions in the local government and public school system, most locals commute to work. “We have a few small businesses and some warehouses,” says Offerman. “But mostly people work in Joliet, Aurora and Plainfield.”
