Mission has hometown charm near Kansas City's core

The city of Mission is a growing city with around 10,000 residents. “Mission is a very friendly area,” says Randi Pereira, a Realtor with Keller Williams. “It has great walkability to shopping and parks, so there are lots of opportunities to meet neighbors and socialize.” It has a small-town feel but also boasts urban convenience with a location minutes from Kansas City’s core.

Bungalows and cottages

“The housing stock in Mission is nearing 100 years old, and there are lots of bungalow-type homes,” says Pereira. Many of the city's Tudor-style cottages and Craftsman-style bungalows date back to its 1920s establishment. There are also modest ranch styles and split levels from the 1950s. The median housing price is in the low $300,000s, which is below the national median but about $100,000 higher than the Kansas City median.

Summer concerts and ball games at Broadmoor Park

All seven of Mission’s recreational hubs provide unique community opportunities, but there are a few that stand out. At Broadmoor Park, there is a playground and several sports fields. In the summer months, the park is also home to the Concert in the Park event, where live musicians, local food vendors and brewers combine for a night of fun. Streamway Park has 4 miles of trails cutting through mature chinquapin oak trees and wild hyacinth flowers. The Powell Community Center offers programs like youth ballet and adult cycling. The Mission Family Aquatic Center is also nearby, offering an indoor pool and an outdoor facility with multiple water slides.

Shopping and dining along Johnson Drive

The city’s major thoroughfare, Johnson Drive, is brimming with shopping and dining options. Urban Prairie Coffee serves seasonal lattes and quiche. R.J.’s Bob-Be-Que Shack is another local favorite known for its slow-cooked southern-style fare. The pork belly burnt ends with a side of creamy mac and cheese is a meal especially loved by locals.

Locals can shop at Hy-Vee and Target. Interstate 35 also runs along the city, making downtown Kansas City and its numerous entertainment districts just a quick 6-mile drive away. There are 15 blocks of retail options at the Country Club Plaza and a variety of restaurants in Westport.

Travel around the Kansas City metro area

Most residents travel by car, though there are a few Johnson County Transit bus stops along Johnson Drive. The Kansas City International Airport is about 25 miles north and emergency care is available at the Saint Luke's Community Hospital in Roeland Park, just east of Mission.

The region faces potential concerns, including the possibility of flooding and wildfires. Mission's CAP Index crime score is 4 out of 10, which is on par with the national average.
