A rural town close to New Paltz

Plattekill is a rural town with acres of farmland and forested hiking trails in the heart of Hudson Valley. Like many nearby communities, the exodus of New York City dwellers since the 2020 pandemic has led to a new wave of homebuyers seeking out more space. Quiet residential streets are scattered between swaths of agricultural land and locally owned farm stands. "There's something for everyone of all ages throughout all the seasons," says Karina Galeano, a local real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North. "It's surrounded by working farms, so seasonal activities include apple picking, pumpkin patches, wineries and hiking." Residents can spend breezy fall days at one of the many nearby wineries, and in the winter, two different ski resorts are just 40 miles away. With quaint country roads, scenic landscapes and a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, well below the national average of 4, Plattekill offers a slower pace of living just miles from all that New Paltz has to offer.

Apple picking, corn mazes and Plattekill Day

Fall's arrival brings with it weekends spent apple picking at Hurds Family Farm. With cows, pigs and chickens and a play area, Hurds offers a full-filled afternoon for the whole family. Kids can jump around a giant inflatable air pillow or race down slides while others get lost in the corn maze. About 10 miles east, Marlboro's Weed Orchards & Winery hosts autumn festivities like the Honeycrisp Festival, where buckets of apples, apple cider donuts, family-friendly activities and alcoholic beverages await. Apple orchards are swapped with pumpkin patches during Weed Orchards' Fall Festival. Every October, attendees can sit back and enjoy live music and scenic views with a seasonal beer or sangria. However, Plattekill's most significant community events occur at Thomas Felten Park. "Plattekill Day is coming up in September," Galeano says. Open fields transform into a jam-packed fair with live music, cornhole, pie eating contests and food and craft vendors. Felten Park also hosts the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, where residents bundle up in winter coats and gather each December to watch the town's tree light up before chatting over a blazing bonfire and singing holiday carols.

Afternoons at Thomas Felten Park

Surrounding farmland gives way to paintball centers and motocross tracks for a dose of adrenaline, but Thomas Felten Park is the only park in town with a playground, covered pavilion and sports fields. In addition to seasonal festivities, Felten Park welcomes local baseball and soccer leagues. About 4 miles west, Gardiner's Majestic Park is another popular afternoon escape. A quiet road leads to a paved parking lot beside a small playground. Facilities include a wall ball court, basketball court, skatepark, and pump track. An 18-hole disc golf course also veers through the bordering tree line. Milton's Cluett Schantz Memorial Park is another nearby green space that hosts seasonal farmers markets, while its large pond attracts anglers looking to catch a striped bass. Plattekill's proximity to the Catskills and winding hiking trails are some of the area's biggest draws. The Hemlock Ridge Multiple Use Area borders the eastern portion of town and offers 83 acres of wooded trails that snake through the western flank of Marlboro Mountain. The towering Shawagunk Mountain Ridge, known as "the Gunks," is less than 20 miles away. Numerous nature preserves hug the ridge line, such as Minnewaska State Park Preserve, Awosting Reserve and Mohonk Preserve. Minnewaska is home to 25 miles of trails, majestic waterfalls, watering holes, and sparking lakes. Closer to home, the Turtle Creek Golf Course at Garden Cathay offers a different kind of green.

Plattekill’s hidden gems and New Paltz’s Main Street

Local businesses are clustered around the town's small hamlets. The hamlet of Plattekill gives way to one lone pizza joint and a Dollar General. About 6 miles north, Modena is home to Hannaford, however nearby family farms like Wright's Farm and Market and Tantillo's Farm Market feature year-round stands that sell fresh produce. Down the street, John Fazio Farms Barbecue & Brick Oven Pizza is located in an unassuming ranch-style barn. Its rustic interior parallels its country landscape, while its menu offers specialty pizzas and barbecue favorites like pulled pork sandwiches and a half rack of smoked ribs served with its homemade signature barbecue sauce. Fazio's also offers a small market that sells hormone and antibiotic-free meat, cheese, eggs, pasta and bread. Plattekill residents are also just 10 miles south of New Paltz's charming downtown. Yoga studios, bakeries, boutiques and cafes line its Main Street, with crowd favorites like Main Street Bistro, known for its classic American breakfast and lunch fare.

Farmhouses, colonials and ranch-style homes

Plattekill's landscape consists of country roads that weave through swaths of farmland and quiet patches of residential development. Winding streets are scattered with a mix of modest bi-level, split-level, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes priced from the low $300,000s to the $600,000s, depending on square footage and acreage. Most properties sit on roomy lots that offer enough space for the occasional above-ground pool but are still close enough to wave hello to passing neighbors. Larger Colonial Revivals and contemporary homes sell into the $600,000s, while New Traditionals on spacious, secluded lots range from the $600,000s to the mid $700,000s. Historic farmhouses on acres of land are hidden far from the road and sell for over $1 million. Homebuyers looking to build their dream home can score plots of undeveloped land ranging from the $60,000s to just over 1 acre to almost $1.5 million for 20 acres. Manufactured homes are also available, ranging from as low as $50,000 to just over $200,000. Like most of the Valley, meandering streams like Quassaic Creek may flood during heavy rains.
