At the southern end of Reading’s suburbs, an old town that used to be known for making flour, wool hats and guns is now a quiet residential community that still looks like how it did a century ago.

Mohnton’s a classic one-stoplight community with early 1900s Colonial-style rowhomes and cottages on sloping residential streets with a few historic chapels made of brick or stone at the center of town. Walking along Mohnton’s sidewalks on a Saturday morning, you’ll likely see neighbors lounging in front of their homes or draining water tins into perennials on porches adorned with American flags or holiday decorations. To the west, the old town center connects to a more contemporary residential area with midcentury-style homes on older roads that link to a modern subdivision that started rising about 30 years ago.

Home prices range substantially throughout Mohnton because of the lots and home styles available in different sizes. In March 2023, a nearly one-acre lot in the newer residential area was listed for only $25,000, while the owners of a 3,100-square-foot, two-story house with a brick-and-vinyl exterior, new roof, covered front porch and an in-ground pool in the back were asking $434,900 for it. Properties in the old town area are generally less expensive because of their older age and smaller size, but homes ranging from 800 to 2,000 square feet can be bought for around $175,000 to $250,000.

Mohnton is a bedroom community with only a few businesses or offices. For dining out, Mangia has been a local staple for more than 30 years. While there are other pizzerias in town, Mangia stands out with its menu that includes traditional Italian entrees. Its service also has a flair when you order Pasta Al Parmigiano Reggiano, prepared tableside in a cheese wheel and set aflame with grappa.

The rise of Mohnton in the mid-1800s can be attributed to grist mills and other industries that relied on the power of Wyomissing Creek. If you follow the waterway’s path, you’ll see that old brick warehouses and factory buildings are still clustered along the creek behind homes on Wyomissing Avenue. A few blocks up the creek, though, residents gather at a county park to play baseball or let their children run, jump and slide at the “Magic in Mohnton” playground, a castle-like structure made of natural wood. On the other side of the old town, the Mifflin Area YMCA provides an additional ball field, sports courts and a fitness center. Like any other YMCA, the organization offers before-and-after school care for children and programs for kids and adults.

The borough’s students belong to the Mifflin School District. At Governor Mifflin Senior High School, students can start earning college credits through dual enrollment programs associated with Alvernia University and Reading Area Community College. For those interested in pursuing a career in health and medicine, seniors can shadow healthcare workers at Reading Hospital and get ahead as part of programs in collaboration with the Berks Career & Technology Center, Tower Health System and Penn State University. Regardless of whether you have kids in the school district, many visit the intermediate school campus at least once a year for the annual Greater Mifflin Community Days, a summertime celebration where guests march in parades, indulge in funnel cake and joyously scream on carnival rides before a showstopping fireworks display at the end of the week.
