Excitement in the sky and life along quiet streets

Home to the Mojave Air and Space Port, Mojave is known best for its presence in history. Site of the SpaceShipOne and Voyager launches, the neighborhood continues to make a name for itself in the aerospace field. Still, the open skies also hold meaning for residents grounded in the desert sand. “They can get away, not be surrounded by streetlights and see the stars,” explains Adrian Rissling of RE/MAX All-Pro, an agent who has sold homes throughout Kern County.

Proximity to Red Canyon and Tomo-Kahni

Nestled in the western part of the Mojave Desert, the neighborhood provides drivable access to several hiking spots and mountain trails; however, there is also a small park with a playground alongside the Mojave Public Library off Mojave-Barstow Highway. Less than 25 miles from Red Rock Canyon State Park, residents can ride horses through the scenic roads, hike with dogs through mountainous terrain or observe the wildlife scampering throughout the park’s borders. The Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park is also within a day’s drive, about 20 miles away, and includes guided tours through the carefully preserved land.

Ranch-style homes in the Mojave Desert

With a population of less than 6,000, Mojave offers a rural feel with lots ranging from a tenth of an acre to nearly 3 acres. Homes are concentrated in a few areas, as the airport and wind turbines take up most of the land and prevent residents from sprawling out beyond a few acres. Most homes feature ranch-style architecture, with houses in the Camelot subdivision including terracotta roofs and attached garages. Sidewalks link houses near State Route 14 to local restaurants and a few small shops, but most residents care more for the mountain views and open skies than walkability. Homes with two bedrooms cost less than $200,000, while three-bedroom houses typically range from $200,000 to $261,000. Homes with four bedrooms are less common and often extend beyond $300,000.

From community events to launching rockets

Mojave holds annual events like the Christmas Tree Lighting, but smaller-scale meetings and activities occur throughout the year. Members of the Reaction Research Society meet monthly to discuss rocket launches and upcoming projects, and nearby Friends of Amateur Rocketry host launch contests and courses in subjects like pyrotechnic operations.

Local businesses along Aerospace Highway

The neighborhood’s small-town feel does not stop at its retailers and restaurants. Though there are a few chains like Starbucks and McDonald’s in Mojave, most businesses within its limits are locally owned, and major retailers are a bit of a drive. As Rissling describes, “There’s not too much of a difference between Mojave and Rosamond, but Rosamond is a little closer to shopping and transportation. They have a few restaurants, but Mojave doesn’t have much.” Stater Bros. Market remains the primary source of fresh produce and pantry staples, and Karl’s Hardware Mojave takes care of home improvement needs. For dining out, Voyager Restaurants serves American cuisine along the runway, allowing patrons to watch planes take flight as they chow down. Other popular spots in the community include Mojave Thai Cuisine and Fatboys Taco, which are located off Aerospace Highway. For access to stores like Sam’s Club, Target and Trader Joe’s, residents head about 35 miles south to Palmdale, a hub of national retailers and home of the Antelope Valley Mall.

Centrally located schools in Kern County

Part of the Mojave Unified School District, the neighborhood gains access to walkable schools for those living near the air and space port and drivability from properties farther south. Students begin at Mojave Elementary, a C-minus-graded school, according to Niche. From here, they venture to Mojave Junior/Senior High School, which boasts a B grade and ranks as the 14th-best public middle school in Kern County. After school, Mojave Junior/Senior High also hosts community college courses through Cerro Coso.

Bus lines and commuting down State Route 14

Bus lines like the 100 and 250 extend out to Mojave, but the length of the trip into Los Angeles makes driving a more popular means of travel. State Route 14 connects to Santa Clarita in 70 miles, and residents can hop on Interstate 5 from here to travel into the heart of Los Angeles in less than 35 additional miles. For travels outside California on commercial flights, Los Angeles International Airport is about 100 miles south.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
