Northeast Monroe is more than just its history
Monroe was once a city with significant wealth. Innovation and invention were at an all-time high in the 1800s and early 1900s, and the area known today as Northeast Monroe was the center of industry. Paper mills and companies gave the city its entrepreneurial start, and furniture, steel, automotive parts and energy manufacturers followed. The area's prosperity has diminished through the decades — companies moved away and shut down. Still, the remnants of buildings and glimpses into early 20th-century wealth remain. Stately homes with grand architecture line the streets where executives once lived, and a large park in the area marks the site for historic battles that led to the city's establishment. Northeast Monroe is more than just its history, however. New employers, new parks and nearby amenities draw newcomers in, contributing to steady population growth. Houses from the city's inception neighbor newer construction, and the area has the most architectural diversity in Monroe. Well-established trees line front yards, separating the houses from roads undergoing construction and improvements. It's easy to look back into the past in Northwest Monroe, but residents also look towards the future as a place to create their history.

Houses of River Raisin Paper Co. employees
Newly built homes are the exception in the Northeast Monroe neighborhood, where most dwellings were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. "All of the streets in the neighborhood that end in 'wood' were built by the owner of River Raisin Paper Co. at the time, Harley Wood," says Steve Hudkins, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who has lived in the area his whole life. According to local legend, Wood wanted to name the main road " Harleywood," but he was talked out of it, and thus, a very similar name, Hollywood, came to be. The homes on Hollywood Drive were built for the executives and management-level employees of River Raisin Paper Co., established in 1834. The smaller homes on the streets leading away from Hollywood were built for the laborers and workers. This divide is evident in the difference in size and price, with the smallest houses being the least expensive. Bungalows, cottages and a few larger styles like American Foursquares and workers' cottages sell between $100,000 and $190,000. More American Foursquares, mid-century ranch-style homes and Victorian homes from the 1910s sit in the middle of the price range, between $200,000 and $350,000. The grandest of the area, Tudors, Colonial Revivals and Neoclassical mansions range from $400,000 to $520,000. Northeast Monroe is a popular choice for homebuyers because of its architectural diversity. "Not every home can be a four-bedroom, three-bathroom house," says Monroe Mayor Bob Clark. "We must build what the community needs and can manage. People have different levels of obtainability."

Lake Erie, Sterling State Park and the War of 1812
According to Mark Cochran, the economic and community development director for the City of Monroe, "It's a great city for those who like the outdoors. A Great Lake, river, state park and National Battlefield Park all converge in one place," he says. Bits of history are throughout the neighborhood, including at River Raisin National Battlefield Park. The park is pet-friendly and has historical markers for those on self-guided tours to read while strolling around the site of some important War of 1812 battles. The River Raisin Heritage Trail spans 8 miles along the river from Munson Park to Sterling State Park and Lake Erie. The trail follows alongside the River Raisin, a popular spot for fishing and kayaking. There is no parking lot at Arbor-Loraine Park, but the small playground and swings set are within a mile walk of most homes in the neighborhood.

La-Z-Boy’s corporate headquarters
While many of Monroe's original industries and companies are no longer in business, plenty of employers remain. Modeled after Google's headquarters, La-Z-Boy's corporate headquarters is in the neighborhood. IHM Sisters is a religious organization that is next door and sold some of their land to La-Z-Boy for the new building. ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital is also in Northeast Monroe, supplying plenty of jobs and noise from sirens. Thanks to sidewalks and crosswalks, many residents can walk to work. Lake Erie Transit buses also service the area, and there are many employers in the industrial plaza on the neighborhood's eastern end, between Interstate 75 and North Dixie Highway. The commercial and industrial area has hotels, national restaurant chains and manufacturers. Toledo, Detroit and Ann Arbor are all within a 40-mile drive, and the nearest airport is in Detroit. Mayor Clark says, "We're not just a spot in the middle, but somewhere people choose to live. There's no need to go to the 'Big Three.'"

A family grocery store more than 75 years old
Monroe Farmers Market is bustling every Saturday, with locals looking to connect with neighbors and bring home goods. Individual booths sell organic produce, local meats, fresh baked goods or flowers. Handmade crafts are also sold there. However, the market is only open from 7 a.m. to noon, so arriving early is the only way to guarantee getting first pick. For grocery shopping on the other days of the week, many visit Danny's Fine Foods. The first location opened 75 years ago on West Elm Ave and has since expanded to a second location on Cole Road. The family-owned-and-operated business bookends Northeast Monroe. Fresh-cut flowers are on the center of each table in Public House, a busy tavern-style restaurant serving American food with a full bar. People meet for lunch and order food piled high on metal trays in the dining room lit by Edison bulbs. Their local food and beverage distributors are listed on their website, showing just how local and fresh their ingredients are.
