Expansive woodlands and large lots just north of Milford
Just about 20 miles from downtown Manchester lies the small rural town of Mont Vernon, where residents have the benefits of country living and proximity to urban amenities. The oldest parts of the community date back to the 1700s, and historic Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes rest on large lots under the shade of towering trees. Houses are situated along quiet country roads that lead to neighboring communities like Amherst, Milford and Manchester. Shopping and dining options aren't far from home. “It’s a place to escape the city,” says Rebecca Schwarz, an administrator with Mont Vernon Town Hall who has lived in the community for over seven years. “It is just close enough to the recreation in nearby cities and just far enough away where you get peace and quiet.”

Mont Vernon hiking trails
Residents of Mont Vernon have a number of ways to access nature. Less than 2 miles from the town square is Purgatory Falls, a walking trail that runs alongside the water and is easily trekked. Lamson Farm is home to additional trails and to the oldest property in town, a farmhouse constructed in 1760. The farm is also the location of multiple annual events, including the vintage baseball game at the Doc Adams Birthplace Classic. Traveling athletes dress up in historical baseball uniforms to honor Doc Adams, one of the sport's earliest players who was born here. The Mont Vernon Historical Society Museum is in the town hall and has artifacts and tales of the town’s past.

Country roads to New Hampshire interstates
State Route 13 and Route 101 are the major roads for the community, allowing for access to Amherst and Manchester, as well as to highways and interstates. “It’s just not like the sprawl in the south. The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is 17 miles to the northeast in Manchester, and the Catholic Medical Center is 16 miles away along the Merrimack River.
Dining and bars in The Oval
Due to Mont Vernon's small size and rural atmosphere, residents often have to hop in the car for dining and shopping options. Four miles to the south is the Milford Oval, where a number of bars and restaurants surround a local park, creating a walkable downtown area. “Lots of people end up heading towards The Oval for restaurants and bars,” Schwarz says. Dining in the Oval can take many forms, from fresh pizza and happy hour deals at Brickyard Restaurant and Brewery, to seasonal cocktails and gastropub fare at Bar One. Residents can shop at the Mont Vernon General Store in the center of town, and larger stores like Target and Market Basket are 13 miles away in Amherst.
