Martin Springs is a rural community in the valley off I-24
Martin Springs is named for a natural spring that flows from a cave in the area, an attraction that was once converted into a roadside resort. No longer a roadside attraction after the interstate passed it by, the area is now home to a small community off Interstate 24 between Monteagle and Kimball. Cabins and a few luxury estates are scattered across the valley and mountains. “It’s pretty through there. The landscape just rolls,” says Melissa Hubbard, a Realtor with Re/Max Realty South who has worked in the area for eight years. “It’s rural, but it’s close enough to everything.”
Rural cabins with sweeping mountain views, plus custom builds
Community homes sit along winding drives, often on large plots with sweeping mountain views. Cabins are most common, though plenty of lots are available for buyers to build their own custom homes. Houses generally sell for $280,000 to $630,000, though larger outliers and luxury estates can go for higher. Land prices vary but typically fall between $10,000 and $30,000 per acre. The CAP Index Crime Score for Martin Springs is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Education through the Marion County School District
The Marion County School District receives an overall C-plus rating from Niche. Students can attend South Pittsburg Elementary, which receives a B-minus, and B-rated South Pittsburg High for seventh through 12th grade. South Pittsburg High offers career education courses in teaching, welding and nursing.
Nearby state recreation areas along the rolling landscape
Valleys cut through Martin Springs, sloping upward toward the Cumberland Plateau. Much of this area is forested, including preserves like Franklin State Forest and the Mr. & Mrs. Harry Lee Carter State Natural Area, both popular hiking spots. The Carter Natural Area also has a cave system to explore. The Foster Falls Recreation Area, 25 miles away, has trails that lead to waterfalls. Otherwise, much of the land throughout the area is privately held.
Kimball Crossing shopping center is convenient to Martin Springs
Due to Martin Springs’ rural character, shoppers head to nearby communities like Kimball or Monteagle, each roughly 10 miles away. Kimball offers a broad selection of stores at the Kimball Crossing shopping center, including Walmart, Lowe’s and Food City. “Kimball is closer, and you don’t have to go up the mountain to Monteagle,” Hubbard says. Local restaurants, like Mountain Goat Market and Papa Ron’s Pizza and Italian Steakhouse, are located in Monteagle, also home to a Piggly Wiggly grocery store.
Community events in Monteagle or South Pittsburg
While the community tends to be quiet, nearby Monteagle hosts several events, including a weekly farmers market in the warmer months. The Mountain Market is an annual weekendlong Appalachian arts and crafts festival, also in Monteagle. Other community events take place in South Pittsburg, including the National Cornbread Festival, which has run for nearly three decades.
Easy access to nearby communities via I-24
Interstate 24 runs through Martin Springs. Chattanooga, the region’s largest city, is roughly 40 miles away. Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport has the nearest commercial flights, roughly 50 miles away. Residents generally drive, but the Southeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency offers a demand-response transportation system throughout Marion County. The Highpoint Health hospital in Sewanee has the closest emergency room, 15 miles away.
