Living near beaches and Del Monte Shopping Center
Sitting on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, East Monterey is a neighborhood with older homes and some major attractions. “The biggest thing is the beach because it’s one of the calmer and less touristy beaches in Monterey,” says Monica Browning of Over the Moon Realty, who has nearly a decade of experience in the area. “But El Estero Park and Del Monte Shopping Center have also been around for decades and are big selling points.” These three staples of East Monterey form the backbone of the neighborhood. On the northern end, the soft sand of Del Monte Beach is a popular spot for surfers and locals who want to watch local wildlife like seals and whales. Farther inland is the massive El Estero Park, while the neighborhood’s southernmost area has been home to the open-air Del Monte Shopping Center since the 1960s.

One of the park’s major features is the Dennis the Menace Playground, with jungle gyms, slides, and a statue of its namesake. The playground was designed by Hank Ketcham, creator of the Dennis the Menace comic strip. El Estero Park also has a skate park, a stocked fishing lake and athletic fields. Paddle boat rentals are available to take out on El Estero Lake. Golds Gym is the spot for an indoor workout, while Cinemark Century movie theatre offers the latest movies.
