About 20 miles north of Salem and less than 40 miles south of Portland is Mount Angel. Known for hosting the largest Oktoberfest in the Pacific Northwest, the small city loves to celebrate its German, Swiss and Bavarian heritage. “The whole town is built around a German theme. Home to around 3,500 residents, Mount Angel has a German-inspired downtown district with businesses, shops and restaurants constructed with exposed wooden beams and steep-pitched rooftops. It has its own city government with a six-member city council, a police department and local library.
