A rural lifestyle
In the rolling hills 10 miles beyond the exurbs of Murfreesboro, in Lascassas, horses and cattle are about as common a sight as people. “The great thing about Lascassas is that there’s a lot of agriculture tracts,” says Realtor Jeff Letzler, a lifetime resident of Murfreesboro who sells homes for John Jones Real Estate LLC. It’s an evolving farming community - new subdivisions rise where livestock once roamed, privacy fencing keeps out loose hay blowing across the fields, and its agricultural past merges with Lascassas' expanding exurbs of now and the future. It’s a tranquil and quiet community—the CAP Index Crime Score gives it a 1, the lowest possible score—and draws the attention of those looking for a bucolic countryside lifestyle beyond the fringes of Nashville.

Diverse housing in a bucolic setting
While farms still spread across the community, with mailboxes mimicking the charming barns still found in the area, subdivisions featuring modern rustic farmhouses have sprung up along the main roads. These planned subdivisions feature built-to-plan homes on cul-de-sacs, with privacy fencing and flat lots that range in size from a quarter-of-an-acre to a half. Homes in these neighborhoods generally sell for between $400,000 and $700,000. While older ranch-style homes from the 1970s, and bi-levels from the 80s sit on spacious lots, sometimes sit on up to 7 acres or more, and can sell for between $300,000 and $600,000. Modern estates on 8 acres or more regularly sell for $800,000 to $1.5 million. Letzler, who has sold homes in the region for 4 years, says some properties go for as high as $3 million – but these tend to be expansive lots or farms, often with over 100 acres of land.

A car-dependent community
Bicyclists might enjoy some recreational riding, but the residents of Lascassas are tethered to their cars and trucks to get around. Nashville International Airport is 40 miles from the center of Lascassas, usually a 50-minute drive. Some residents may commute to Nashville – Downtown is roughly 42 miles away and can take upwards of an hour at peak times – but many work in closer towns like Murfreesboro and Smyrna, which is only 15 miles away. While there are daytime urgent care facilities 7 miles away, the nearest 24-hour emergency care center is Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford, in the center of Murfreesboro, up to a 13-mile drive from the furthest reaches of the community.
Southern comfort food
Tucked away in a converted house, Fatguy Southern Kitchen serves up classic barbecue dishes and Southern sides with a twist; and residents here can dine at picnic tables situated beneath the Tennessee sky. It’s pretty much the only dining option in town, although Smokey’s Market and Deli offers some grab-and-go meals too. Residents who need a gallon of milk or a carton of eggs can grab them at Smokey's or at the Last Stop Market, but for larger grocery runs, most will head down Lascassas Pike to the Kroger on the outskirts of Murfreesboro. Lascassas Feed Supply helps take care of feed and animal needs, a crucial store for an agricultural community; while Maple Bend Bee Supply has everything an apiarist needs to keep their hives alive and their pollinators flying across the countryside.

Bradley Creek weaves through the community and offers a spot for wading, a little bit of rafting, and the chance to catch a smallmouth or rock bass. For the serious boaters and hikers, Fall Creek Recreation Area has a boat ramp for launching out to explore the network of creeks on Nashville’s eastern side. Lascassas Ball Park has a pair of lit fields for baseball and softball, along with a community pavilion and a small playset.
