Space to spread out with proximity to everything Nashville has to offer
Five miles south of Murfreesboro, Walterhill is a rural community that is home to rolling farmlands, streams and forests — and a handful of newer developments. History also runs deep here. Settled around 1790, the community still has several antebellum homes standing. One of those is Pebble Hill, the site of the Rutherford County Court’s first meeting and the area’s first schoolhouse. “Walterhill got its name when the postmaster named Walter Hill used his own name as the postmark,” says Billy Prittard, a local writer. Many area volunteers participated in the Battle of New Orleans under Gen. Andrew Jackson. “Walterhill grew and prospered in its first half-century. The wilderness was cleared for farming, mills were established, homes were built and expanded to accommodate growing families,” says Prittard. That growth continued until destruction during the Civil War ravaged the area. In 1940, the federal government established the Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital in the southeastern corner of Walterhill. The medical center expanded rapidly and is now a thriving hospital and retirement home serving thousands of veterans. Overall, however, most of the area remains rural. Driving along country roads, one is as likely to pass a field of cattle as to pass another car.
Newer homes on several acres of land
Development in Walterhill has been mostly in the southeast corner. The majority of new homes in the community were built after 2000. Most are large and many sit on several acres of land. Neat lawns and private driveways are common. Home prices start at about $335,000 for a 3-bedroom ranch to $1.2 million for a 3-bedroom Cape Cod with an inground pool on 17 acres. Typical home styles include ranches, Cape Cods, Craftsman and colonials. There are few sidewalks in the area.
Waterhill is experiencing a rise in the popularity of larger two-story brick homes.
