Midcentury ranch-style homes with picket fences
McPherson’s midcentury ranch-style homes are often lined with picket fences, and basketball hoops and front yard swing sets are a common sight. Lawns are large enough for a Japanese maple or a rose garden, plus a paved two-car driveway. In the neighborhood's south, homes include early 20th-century cottages and Folk Victorians. “It’s an eclectic neighborhood for people who want to get away from cookie-cutter houses,” says Heli Sairanen, a broker associate with Coldwell Banker Brokers of the Valley who’s sold homes in Napa for 48 years. Most local homes have three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and range from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet; depending on a home's size and renovations, prices range from $650,000 to $950,000. In the Napa Valley Manor 55-plus community, 21st-century manufactured homes range from $150,000 to $190,000, depending on their renovations.Playgrounds at O’Brien Park
At the 9-acre O’Brien Park in the east, kids can burn off some energy on the playground or at the soccer field. The Napa Valley Vine Trail, a 47-mile paved path that connects to Calistoga and Vallejo, passes through the neighborhood and is popular for both cyclists and walkers. Kayakers can access the Napa River northeast at the 33-acre Trancas Crossing Park, which has a kayak launch and a 1-mile trail through the forest. In the neighborhood’s northwest, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Napa Valley has a clubhouse that kids in Grades 1 through 5 can join in order to participate in summer camps, after-school programs and special events like the Halloween Carnival and March Madness basketball tournament.Within walking distance of McPherson Elementary
Different parts of the neighborhood are zoned for different schools within the Napa Valley Unified district. Kids living east of Jefferson Street can start at McPherson Elementary, which is within walking distance and earns a C from Niche, then continue to the B-minus-rated Silverado Middle. Kids living west of Jefferson Street can start at West Park Elementary, located on the other side of Highway 29, and then continue to Redwood Middle; both schools earn a B from Niche.Kids who live east of Main Street move on to Vintage High, and kids living west of Main Street attend Napa High; both high schools are rated B-plus. Vintage High has its own farm where students can get hands-on agricultural experience, while Napa High, which is located within walking distance of most homes in McPherson, offers 25 clubs, including Ultimate Frisbee Club and Project Lit.
Memorial Stadium, the football field shared by both Napa High and Vintage High, is in the neighborhood’s west. The schools play on alternate weeks, and games and practices can get loud. “You can hear the marching band and football games,” Cline says. “It does get noisy, but the biggest impact on the neighborhood is traffic and parking.”
The free Napa Lighted Art Festival
Downtown Napa’s popular events are just over a mile away, including the Napa Lighted Art Festival in January and February, where festivalgoers can explore illuminated art installations in the city. The Fourth of July Celebration is another way to take in colorful lights downtown; residents can enjoy food and music at Oxbow Commons and then watch the largest drone light show in Northern California.Bikeable and walkable to Downtown Napa
McPherson is bordered west by Highway 29, which leads 15 miles south to Interstate 80. Soscol Avenue in the east leads just over 1 mile south to Downtown Napa. Residents can get around the city without a car, as they have easy access to the Vine bus, bike lanes and sidewalks. Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center is around 2 miles north. Napa County Airport, a public airport with no commercial flights, is 9 miles south; San Francisco International Airport is 61 miles south, and San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, a smaller airport with mostly domestic flights, is a 53-mile trip.Burgers at Red Rock Café & Back Door BBQ
McPherson’s central location puts it close to stores and restaurants. Red Rock Café & Back Door BBQ has been a casual local staple for over 30 years, known for ribs smothered in a secret-recipe barbecue sauce. Butter Cream Bakery & Diner has filled the neighborhood with the aroma of fresh donuts every morning since 1948. Local shops can be found on Jefferson Street and Pueblo Avenue, including The Hub Bicycles and Van Winden’s Garden Center. Downtown Napa’s upscale restaurants and boutiques are just over a mile south, and big-box stores like Target and Petco are around 2 miles north. Nearby grocery stores include La Morenita Market, Safeway and Walmart. The Napa Valley Wine Train
While some residents love the Napa Valley Wine Train when it passes through the neighborhood, others might not appreciate the train’s whistle or rumble. Traffic noise from Highway 29 and other neighborhood thoroughfares might also be heard. The Napa River is to the east, and homes in the neighborhood's southeast are in a Special Flood Hazard Area; homeowners here might have to buy flood insurance and get special permits for construction projects. The Napa River/Creek Flood Protection Project has reduced the flooding risk, and the construction of new levees is scheduled for 2025.
While McPherson's risk for direct effects from wildfires is low, residents here may experience reduced air quality from nearby wildfires. Concerned residents can stay up to date on nearby fires by signing up for Nixle alerts.
