A small borough with a unique identity

Located on the Philadelphia Main Line, Narberth is a Philadelphia neighborhood with historic architecture, a quaint downtown and an involved community. Narberth was initially settled in 1682 by Welsh Quakers and incorporated in 1895. Although several centuries have passed, the community still retains its small-town appeal. Most homes are within walking distance of a charming commercial district of businesses, restaurants, pastry shops and local bookstores. With a population of 4,300 and an exceptionally low crime score of 2/10, this half-square-mile borough offers residents a quiet, safe and community-oriented way of life. “The borough has its own unique identity. People know each other here. I could tell you the name of everyone on my street,” says Pat Clark, a Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line, who grew up in Narberth. “There has always been a great sense of community spirit and all kinds of events like celebrations on holidays and basketball and playground leagues.”

Historic homes with gracious gardens

Narberth has many beautifully kept homes — both historic and newer — on its tree-lined residential streets. Sidewalks meander past homes with gracious gardens and ornamental landscaping. Known for its Dutch Colonial and Victorian-style homes, Cape Cods and bungalows, Narberth is also home to twins and row houses. Home buyers can expect to pay between $335,000 and $1.8 million for homes in the community. “The primary housing stock is from the late 1800s to the 1930s,” notes Clark. “When Narberth was built, it was primarily for the railroad working class. But the area’s walkability has brought Narberth back. It has become a lot more desirable to live here.”

Stellar schools for young scholars

Narberth schools are a part of the Lower Merion School District, which holds an A-plus rating from Niche. In fact, the stellar score applies to all district schools. Children may begin their education at Merion Elementary, which serves grades kindergarten through fourth. Niche names Merion as the seventh-best elementary school in Pennsylvania. Bala Cynwyd Middle serves grades fifth through eights and is ranked as Pennsylvania’s sixth-best middle school. Lower Merion High School is ranked as the seventh-best public high school in the state. Kobe Bryant played basketball for the high school, and in 2010, the school’s gymnasium was renamed in his honor. Both Bryn Mawr College and St. Joseph University are less than 5 miles away.

Outdoor trails and parks

Outdoor activity is readily available with the 2-mile Cynwyd Heritage Trail located in Narberth’s neighboring town of Bala Cynwyd, and several larger parks in other surrounding neighborhoods. Narberth Park and its basketball courts along Haverford Avenue offer residents the chance to let loose, play a pick-up game or visit the baseball diamonds for a rousing game of softball, baseball, or kickball. Open fields are great for lounging or playing a game of catch or soccer. A large playground features swings, twisty slides and jungle gym equipment.

Shops on the avenue

Locals have many shopping options along Haverford Avenue, including boutiques and other retailers. The Cheese Company is a favorite place to stop in and peruse its selection of fine cheeses. Grocery shoppers do not have far to go to restock the kitchen, as there is an Acme Market on Montgomery Avenue. If the shopping works up an appetite, the borough has plenty of dining options. For a memorable slice of pizza with homemade dough, hit up Real Pizza for a pie to share. Ryan Christopher’s is a family-run bistro restaurant that serves seafood, pasta and meat dishes.

Scavenger hunts and live music

There is always something to do in Narberth. In March, the Narberth Business Association hosts the annual Leprechaun Hunt, when kids scour restaurants and shops throughout the town in search of hidden leprechauns. The town goes all out for its Narberth Fireworks event. Festivities include a parade and carnival in Narberth Park and fireworks at dusk. In October, there is another kids’ scavenger hunt, this time tracking down witches hidden throughout Narberth. Live music is an integral part of all Narberth get togethers, with bands and artists performing at First Fridays and concerts in the park. In December, the community comes together for the Dickins Festival, which includes dancers, musicians, puppets shows and more.

Getting in and around the town

Narberth is 7 miles from downtown Philadelphia. Commuting is easy thanks to an extensive bus system and easy train access on the Paoli/Thorndale line of the SEPTA system. Close proximity to Routes 30, 1, and 76 also make car travel a breeze.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
