Nashville’s Fisk neighborhood has history and some new energy
Fisk is home to Fisk University and Meharry Medical College, two private and historically Black institutions. The neighborhood is part of North Nashville, a diverse and much larger area that has received some new projects in recent times. “It’s getting new life and new eyes on it,” says Rachel Mays, a Realtor with Hive Nashville. In Fisk, a few new homes, luxury apartments and creative student housing have trickled into this neighborhood not far from some of Nashville’s top destinations. “There aren’t many neighborhoods left in the city where you can find really good renovation projects or reasonably priced new construction that has proximity to downtown,” says Summer Edeen, a Realtor with the Ashton Real Estate Group. “I would say that’s a big part [of the draw].” Additionally, Fisk neighbors Watkins Park, now a small destination for boutique shopping, craft drinks and entertainment.
Housing ranges from older bungalows to contemporary homes
Styles here include Craftsman bungalows, ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and contemporary homes with flat and slanted, skillion roofs. Despite the newer housing, Edeen says some buyers still like the older homes for details like their flooring and ornate woodwork. “For people who want more character, you find that in those areas,” she says. Sidewalks are in much of the neighborhood, and some of them near Fisk University are made of red bricks. Other neighborhood features include a Fisk University dorm complex made up of stacked yellow and blue shipping containers. Size is a cost factor, and homes may sell from about $410,000 to $680,000. However, only five homes sold between March and August in 2025, and less than a tenth of residents here are owners.
Students may learn about music production at Pearl-Cohn
Metro Nashville Public Schools serves the city and allows students to apply to schools outside of their zones. However, schools zoned for Fisk include Park Avenue Elementary, which receives a C-minus from Niche. Park Avenue is an option school that places a special focus on positive behavior. Students may then attend Moses McKissack Middle School and Pearl-Cohn High School, both of which get C-minus grades. Pearl-Cohn is a magnet school that offers access to the Academies of Nashville, a series of programs that let students get an early look at various careers. At Pearl-Cohn’s Academy of the Entertainment Industry, for example, students may take courses in areas like audio and visual production.
Restaurants and bars serve Caribbean food, pizzas and craft spirits
Dining options include Riddim n Spice, a Caribbean restaurant located in a distinct brick and turquoise building. The Grandpa Bar serves drinks like espresso martinis in a low-key spot in the Apex Marathon Village, an upscale apartment complex. For some craft spirits, there’s Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery in neighboring Watkins Park. Although it’s also outside of Fisk, Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria is another favorite in this area. “It’s one of my favorite pizza spots in all of Nashville,” Edeen says. “It’s personalized pizza. They have this really good white pizza. It’s quick, easy, the vibe is really cool and the people who work there are really awesome.” Kroger is one of the nearest grocery stores and went through a renovation in 2025.
Watkins Park and other nearby Nashville spaces offer recreation
Located in the neighboring community, Watkins Park is one of this area’s main outdoor spaces. The park has several sports amenities, including a pump track for avid skateboarders and BMX bikers, tennis courts and a basketball court covered in multi-colored artwork. The art includes the face of Perry Wallace, the first Black basketball player in the Southeastern Conference. A community center and the Nashville Public Library’s Watkins Park branch are other facilities here.
Fisk is close to two other Nashville destinations, Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park and Centennial Park. Both parks have green spaces and walking paths, but they also have their own distinct attractions. Centennial Park has a replica of Greece’s Parthenon, while the 95-Bell Carillon has long been one of Bicentennial Mall’s most popular points.
Community traditions include the Spring Arts Festival
In April, Fisk University hosts the Spring Arts Festival, an event that has been going on since 1929. Activities during the week-long celebration include showings of student and faculty artwork, musical performances and student films. The festival’s past guests have ranged from Harlem Renaissance figures like Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes to contemporary artists like Nikki Giovanni and Quincy Jones.
Commuters have access to WeGo bus and I-40
The neighborhood has several WeGo bus stops for residents who don’t have cars. Commuters who drive have quick access to Interstate 40, which connects to Interstate 65 and goes to the suburban communities on the city’s west end. Fisk is a few miles west of Downtown Nashville, a major entertainment destination with popular venues like the Ryman Auditorium. The neighborhood is less than 10 miles west of the Nashville International Airport, the region’s hub for commercial flights. Nashville General Hospital offers emergency care and shares a campus with Meharry Medical College.
