Nashville neighborhood next to many institutions
Located just a few miles west of downtown Nashville, Hadley/Washington is an evolving neighborhood surrounded by some important institutions. Among the unique characteristics here is that the neighborhood is flanked by historically black higher education institutions. Tennessee State University lies just west of Intestate 40 and the neighborhood’s western bounds. East of the neighborhood, on both sides of Dr DB Todd Jr Boulevard, are Meharry Medical College and Fisk University. Hadley/Washington also sits just north of the bustling and popular Midtown neighborhood, as well as Centennial Park, the city’s most prominent urban green space. “There are a lot of parks nearby like Hadley Community Park and Watkins Park,” says Sara Evers, a broker associate with Compass’ Moving Music City team, who’s made a few sales in Hadley/Washington. “It’s a really cool area because of the location and the history of it. You got brick ranch homes on big lots, which is something that’s kind of hard to find in urban Nashville. It’s kind of a hidden gem of a neighborhood.” The neighborhood has also started to change, as seen by an influx of newer homes being built there. “It’s definitely changing because it’s one of Nashville’s urban neighborhoods. It’s been a great place for investors to invest in recent years.”
Marvel at The Parthenon’s Athena statue
The neighborhood is located about a mile north of the 132-acre Centennial Park. One of the city’s premier green spaces, this urban park boasts a number of amenities renown across the city. At its heart is The Parthenon, Nashville’s leading art museum. Not only is it modeled after the globally recognized ancient Greek temples, but the impressive structure draws its name from the most famous of the buildings that occupy the Acropolis of Athens in Greece. Many of the venue’s visitors have marveled at the replica of the 42-foot statue of the Hellenic goddess Athena. Visitors can take to the park’s walking trail, which winds through the green space and passes by historical monuments, Lake Watauga and even a bench formally dedicated to pop superstar Taylor Swift. Dog owners can let their pets roam at the Centennial Dog Park, while others can visit the park’s sunken garden. Those looking for some indoor activities can challenge themselves at Climb Nashville West, a rock climbing gym located about a mile west of Hadley/Washington.
Get a taste of Nashville’s brewery and distillery scene
A number of dining spots exist along Clifton Avenue. Hearty down home Southern cooking can be found at Swett’s, while A-ROI By Smiley Thai serves an Asian fusion menu. Those interested in trying out Caribbean fare can stop by Riddim n Spice on Meharry Boulevard. A little farther east on Clifton is Blackstone Brewing, one of many such establishments in Nashville. And while it’s outside of the neighborhood, the Corsair Distillery & Taproom is about a mile east. Located inside a repurposed industrial building overlooked by a water tower, the acclaimed Corsair is a city favorite for tasting both craft spirits and beers. “Nashville's kind of become like a craft beer Mecca,” Evers says. “It’s one of the tourist attractions, the distilleries and breweries here.” A Whole Foods sits 2 miles east of the neighborhood.
Neighborhood rising with new contemporaries
Hadley/Washington’s neighborhood streets feature a mixture of generations. The residential pocket along Morena Street, for example, is lined with closely placed homes. Craftsman, bungalow and ranch-style features are common among the houses here. However, a growing number of modern contemporary style homes are joining these older cottages. Price points can go from around $350,000 for a less than 1,000-square-foot and older Craftsman to nearly $1 million for a far larger and newer two-story house. A newer and contemporary style three-bedroom townhouse can go for just over $600,000.
Pearl Cohn’s Academy of Entertainment Industry
Schools serving the neighborhood include Park Avenue Elementary School, Moses McKissack Middle School and Pearl-Cohn Magnet High School, all of which received C-minus grades from ratings site Niche. Pearl-Cohn is one of 12 high schools that make up the Academies of Nashville, a nationally recognized college and career prep model that offers students specialized focus on a variety of fields like health care and engineering. Pearl-Cohn's two specialized programs include the Academy of Entertainment Industry, which offers enhanced pathways in audio and visual productions. Hadley/Washington is flanked by a few historically black higher education institutions. They include the land grant institution Tennessee State University and Fisk University, a private liberal arts college. And there’s the United Methodist Church affiliated Meharry Medical College, which has its acclaimed School of Medicine.
Close to downtown events like CMA Fest
With downtown Nashville just a couple miles away, the neighborhood isn’t far from the lineup of events in that part of the city. The four-day CMA Fest takes place downtown in June. Nashville’s biggest musical festival, it’s considered the biggest country music event in the country. There’s also Tennessee Titans games at Nissan Stadium, which is located right across the Cumberland River.
I-40 commuting
Interstate 40 runs right along Hadley/Washington’s western bounds, providing a direct route to some of Nashville’s other western neighborhoods. Going east, the roadway connects to Interstate 65, which forms part of the route to Nashville’s northern and eastern neighborhoods. Several WeGo Public Transit bus stops can be found within Hadley/Washington. The Nashville International Airport is located about a 10-mile drive to the east. Residents here are close to a few medical facilities. Located right off Charlotte Avenue is the TriStar Centennial Medical Center and the nearby Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown. Right outside the neighborhood’s eastern bounds is the Nashville General Hospital.
