Why Hermitage is a good place to live

Hermitage offers plenty of recreation, shopping and dining options and a bit more affordability than some of the suburbs on the east side of the Nashville metro. This large community on the city’s east end is named after the Hermitage, the former home of President Andrew Jackson and now a local attraction. Hermitage has many smaller housing communities located around shopping areas with big-box retailers, grocery stores and restaurants serving items like pizza, barbecue and Mexican fare. The community is right between Old Hickory and Percy Priest lakes, both of which are major outdoor destinations.

Buyers can find homes from several generations

Most of the homes in Hermitage were built between the mid-20th century and today. With many of them located along roads with no sidewalks, homes here range from Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes to Colonial Revivals, New Traditionals and contemporary homes. The community has many renters who make up nearly half of the residents. “I focus on renting out clients’ homes, and it’s very popular for renting,” says Juli Schumann, managing broker of Sound City Realty.

Hermitage is less expensive than Nashville and nearby suburbs

“Hermitage is not so much a neighborhood, but a small community full of affordable homes occupied by predominantly working-class families,’ says Diane Journell, a Realtor at Benchmark Realty. Hermitage’s median sale price of $400,000 is over $100,000 below Nashville’s and even lower than the nearby suburbs of Mount Juliet and Hendersonville.

Size is a cost factor here, and many homes that are 2,000 square feet or less sell from the mid $200,000s to the upper $500,000s. Larger homes can range between $400,000 and $800,000. Townhouses can go from the lower $200,000s to the lower $400,000s.

The neighborhood has many shopping and dining options

Kroger, Walmart and Lowe’s are a few of the chain stores in the area, while the community has a large and diverse mix of restaurants:

  • Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe is a casual chain serving Greek fare.
  • Whitt’s Barbecue has down-home cooking and smoked meats.
  • Gondola House Pizzeria has warm pies.
  • JB’s Pour House offers beers and a place to catch up on sports.
  • Nadeen’s Hermitage Haven has coffee with bourbon and chicken and waffles.

“It’s also not far from the community of Mount Juliet, where there’s a lot of shopping in the Providence area of Mount Juliet,” Schumann says.

There is plenty of outdoor and water recreation

Percy Priest Lake is a massive outdoor destination, and several parks along the shore provide access to the 14,000-acre reservoir. “A lot of locals take their boats south to Percy Priest Lake, or they walk their dogs and sunbathe by the shore,” Journell says. Long Hunter State Park has a few boat ramps along the lake, and anglers there can catch bass, catfish and bream. Hiking and biking are popular activities at the park, which has more than 30 miles of trails that pass through a few habitats. If you’re looking for water activities but don’t want to get into the lake, there’s the Nashville Shores Water Park with its many tall and twisting waterslides.

Old Hickory Lake offers similar activities to Percy Priest, while Ravenwood Park is another popular outdoor spot that also has a modern playground, workout stations and a basketball court. Ravenwood offers access to the Stones River Greenway, a roughly 11-mile, tree-lined path.

The Hermitage is a local destination

If you’re a history buff, you might want to check out The Hermitage. The Greek Revival mansion is a museum that offers a look into President Jackson’s life and some of the area’s history. Attractions on The Hermitage’s grounds include a few preserved log cabins, both of which contain a variety of artifacts. Events here include April’s Sip of History, which gives visitors a taste of Tennessee culture by letting them sample whiskeys for a few hours.

Several schools are in the neighborhood

Hermitage can be attractive for parents who don’t want their children to travel far for school. Hermitage Elementary, Dodson Elementary and Dupont Tyler Middle schools are just some of the neighborhood’s schools. Hermitage offers the Cambridge curriculum, an international program that lets students do more advanced and rigorous learning.
