Wedgewood-Houston
Craft libations at Jackalope Brewing, Diskin Cider and Corsair
Wedgewood-Houston’s renown nightlife can be experienced in areas like Houston and Humphreys streets, where cafes and dining establishments have gone into repurposed industrial buildings. Bastion offers an upscale setting where potted plants spruce up the liquor shelf. Chefs decide the menu each week and often serve plates of fine seafood and sliced meats with artistic flair. Next door at Americano Lounge, there are coffee flights and espressos served in small glasses. And craft beer fans can hop across the street to the refitted tin metal warehouse to try out some of the choices at the Jackalope Brewing Company. Just a few buildings north is Dicey’s Tavern, where groups can enjoy thin-crust pizzas under sun umbrellas attached to picnic tables. More libations can be sampled farther south right along Martin Street. Diskin Cider serves its refreshing beverages in mason jars brought out in drawer-style wooden trays. Many will occasionally gather around a small stage and under the dim lights to enjoy live music. A short walk south, past some industrially-themed residences, is a neighborhood location of the award-winning Corsair Distillery. The establishment was the first craft distillery in the Music City since Prohibition when it opened in the early 2010s. Whether it’s a leather bound chest, rare comic book volumes or antique houseware, some gems can be unearthed at the Nashville Flea Market just south of the neighborhood. More than 1,000 dealers from over two dozen states usually visit the grounds. For groceries and general goods shopping, a Kroger and Walmart are a roughly 2-mile drive south of the neighborhood.Blending both new and classic housing into industrial setting
Wedgewood Houston’s new housing consists of contemporary style homes and flat-roofed buildings with brick, wood and concrete exteriors. Some of the homes have been blended into the industrial setting, as seen in areas like Hamilton Avenue where modern apartment-style buildings have appeared around the railroad tracks and warehouses. Traditional neighborhood pockets still exist in places like Southgate Avenue, where both newer houses and classic smaller homes with Cape Cod, Craftsman and bungalow traits occupy a street lined with tall and mature trees. Residents can often be seen relaxing and socializing on their front porches or balconies. Price points for the contemporary houses can run roughly from $770,000 to $940,000, with factors like overall size and age playing some role. Their older counterparts, a number of which are about a century-old, can run between $550,000 and $650,000. Price points for condos can range from $375,000 for a unit under 1,000 square feet to $575,000 for one with a little more square footage. Many townhouses, or attached houses, that are over 2,000 square feet can be found for around $800,000.Surrounded by artistic celebrations and sporting contests
From festivals to sporting contests, this part of the city is teeming with events. Movie buffs flock to the area near the flea market each September to celebrate the annual Nashville Film Festival, the longest continuing event of its kind in the South. The event showcases and honors productions ranging from sophisticated arthouse films to animated works and documentaries. There are also competitions for screenwriting and for pitching a television pilot or feature film. On the first Saturday of each month, many can step into some of the repurposed industrial facilities prevalent in the neighborhood to admire the works showcased in the WeHo Art Crawl. Fans of stock car races can still catch contests at the speedway, while the fairgrounds plays an annual lineup of events that range from a reptile convention and the Nashville Comicon to a World Oddities Expo where goers can find items like macabre art and taxidermy.Science and history lessons around Fort Negley Park
