New Castle’s Summit Lake State Park, just north of the area, provides almost 2,700 acres of space for outdoor recreation. A swimming beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and roughly 6 miles of trails surround the water. There’s also a campground with 120 sites. Dining and shopping options span New Castle and Hagerstown
Hungry Ashland-Millville residents have an array of restaurants in downtown New Castle. Ky's American Bistro has a popular salad bar. Primo, located across the street, is a draw for Italian food. The Sweet Pea Catering Company is an option for lunch. “Sweet Pea does a lot of catering, but they have a little lunch spot where you can run in and get prepared salads or whatever, and it’s really good,” Carr says. Other businesses downtown include Selah Salon and Spa and Maxwell’s Mercantile, a store selling clothing, housewares and specialty foods. Harvest Supermarket, part of a family-owned Indiana chain, stocks more grocery items.Hagerstown also has a small grocery, Hagerstown Food Market. Willie and Red’s restaurant in Hagerstown has a weekend smorgasbord buffet. “It’s pretty popular for an evening out,” Carr says.
Area schools target student needs and interests
The New Castle Community Schools system and Nettle Creek School Corporation cover most students in the area. Those on the west side are within the New Castle district, which maintains a B rating on Niche. Eastwood, rated C-plus, is the system’s easternmost elementary school and rewards good attendance with movies, doughnuts and gift cards. New Castle Middle also gets a C-plus and has a jazz ensemble and a cooking club. New Castle High is rated B-minus, and its Pathways to Your Future program offers course topics in agriculture to computer science.The B-minus-rated Nettle Creek School Corporation serves those in Ashland-Millville’s east side. Its B-minus-rated Hagerstown Elementary features an Accelerated Curriculum & Enrichment program with advanced instruction for high-performing students. Hagerstown Jr.-Sr. High also gets a B-minus, and students there can participate in clubs like Eastern Indiana Model Legislature and Business Professionals of America.
State Road 38 is a key east-west thoroughfare
Indiana state Road 38 bisects the Ashland-Millville area and is the main road for trips west into downtown New Castle and east into the heart of Hagerstown. Interstate 70 runs by the south end of Ashland-Millville and takes drivers 52 miles west into downtown Indianapolis and 65 miles to the Indianapolis International Airport. New Castle’s 50-bed Henry Community Health hospital is 5 miles away and includes emergency services.Farmer’s Pike is a long-running festival
This section of New Castle is home to the Farmer’s Pike Festival, which dates back more than 40 years and occurs over four days during Labor Day weekend. The festival attracts an assortment of vendors selling antiques, art, jewelry and other items.
