Ashland-Millville is a pastoral piece of New Castle

In Ashland-Millville, vast stretches of farmland provide the canvas for an area shaped by simplicity and space. “I think because it is more rural,” says local Realtor Beth Carr, who’s with Re/Max First Integrity and has about 30 years of industry experience. “And so it’s going to be quieter.” Homes here often come with at least an acre of land on the eastern outskirts of New Castle, a small city outside Indianapolis. Yet residents are within 10 miles of the attractions in both downtown New Castle and the neighboring community of Hagerstown.

Homes come with age, but also space

Most houses in Ashland-Millville were built in the mid-20th century, though some homes are over 100 years old. Ranch-style options are common and sometimes with attached garages. “But there are going to be a fair amount of what I would consider a farmhouse,” Carr says. “Sometimes a story and a half or a two-story that may or may not have a little bit of land with it. It is a farming area, and there are some big farmers out there.” In parts of the community, fields of crops like corn, soybeans, wheat and hay separate the houses. Properties here sell for $140,000 to $410,000. The CAP Index Crime Score in Ashland-Millville is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Summit Lake serves up fishing, hiking and camping

New Castle’s Summit Lake State Park, just north of the area, provides almost 2,700 acres of space for outdoor recreation. The park’s lake is open to motorized boating at idle speed, canoeing and kayaking. Anglers can catch species including bass and catfish here. A swimming beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and roughly 6 miles of trails surround the water. There’s also a campground with 120 sites. Visitors can go cross-country skiing and ice fishing in the park during the wintertime.

Westwood Golf Club, on the west side of town, has an 18-hole course open to the public. Those looking for an indoor outing can explore the nearby Wilbur Wright Birthplace Museum. Wright and his brother Orville became aviation pioneers, achieving the first-ever powered and sustained aircraft flight. The museum, located in the house where Wright was born, displays a variety of aviation memorabilia.

Dining and shopping options span New Castle and Hagerstown

Hungry Ashland-Millville residents have an array of restaurants in downtown New Castle. Ky's American Bistro has a popular salad bar. Primo, located across the street, is a draw for Italian food. The Sweet Pea Catering Company is an option for lunch. “Sweet Pea does a lot of catering, but they have a little lunch spot where you can run in and get prepared salads or whatever, and it’s really good,” Carr says. Other businesses downtown include Selah Salon and Spa and Maxwell’s Mercantile, a store selling clothing, housewares and specialty foods. Harvest Supermarket, part of a family-owned Indiana chain, stocks more grocery items.

Hagerstown also has a small grocery, Hagerstown Food Market. Willie and Red’s restaurant in Hagerstown has a weekend smorgasbord buffet. “It’s pretty popular for an evening out,” Carr says.

Area schools target student needs and interests

The New Castle Community Schools system and Nettle Creek School Corporation cover most students in the area. Those on the west side are within the New Castle district, which maintains a B rating on Niche. Eastwood, rated C-plus, is the system’s easternmost elementary school and rewards good attendance with movies, doughnuts and gift cards. New Castle Middle also gets a C-plus and has a jazz ensemble and a cooking club. New Castle High is rated B-minus, and its Pathways to Your Future program offers course topics in agriculture to computer science.

The B-minus-rated Nettle Creek School Corporation serves those in Ashland-Millville’s east side. Its B-minus-rated Hagerstown Elementary features an Accelerated Curriculum & Enrichment program with advanced instruction for high-performing students. Hagerstown Jr.-Sr. High also gets a B-minus, and students there can participate in clubs like Eastern Indiana Model Legislature and Business Professionals of America.

State Road 38 is a key east-west thoroughfare

Indiana state Road 38 bisects the Ashland-Millville area and is the main road for trips west into downtown New Castle and east into the heart of Hagerstown. Interstate 70 runs by the south end of Ashland-Millville and takes drivers 52 miles west into downtown Indianapolis and 65 miles to the Indianapolis International Airport. New Castle’s 50-bed Henry Community Health hospital is 5 miles away and includes emergency services.

Farmer’s Pike is a long-running festival

This section of New Castle is home to the Farmer’s Pike Festival, which dates back more than 40 years and occurs over four days during Labor Day weekend. The festival attracts an assortment of vendors selling antiques, art, jewelry and other items.
