Fair Haven has river access and low prices under 2 miles from downtown

Sitting on the deck at the Fair Haven Oyster Company and looking out at the view of the Quinnipiac River below, it’s easy to forget that the peninsular neighborhood of Fair Haven is bordered by Interstate 91 and sits less than 2 miles east of Downtown New Haven. The neighborhood pairs its convenient location with some of the lowest real estate prices in the area, as well as popular public parks and a range of dining. With easy access to the Quinnipiac River, the Mill River and New Haven Harbor, those who love the water feel right at home.

Multi-family homes in Fair Haven cost less than in nearby areas

Fair Haven is known for the architecture of its homes, including narrow two-story colonials and Victorians along sidewalk-lined streets. “All along the river area, you have the old oyster houses of the 1800s, so it’s just a very charming place,” says Jack Hill, the owner and broker of Seabury Hill Realtors. These waterfront houses are more likely to be single-family homes, but multi-family homes are much more common just a few blocks inland. Hill says in his experience, most multi-family homes are owner-occupied, though. “It’s usually multi-generational use,” he says. “They might live on the first floor, and their cousin lives on the second floor.”

Multi-family homes here have a wide price range, from the mid-$200,000s to the high $500,000s. Single-family houses typically range from the mid-$200,000s to the low $400,000s. The area also has some condos that typically range from the high $100,000s to the low $200,000s. “The prices are comparatively inexpensive in Fair Haven,” says Lauren Freedman, a broker at Coldwell Banker. “And parts of the neighborhood are really up and coming.” Fair Haven’s median sale price falls in the low $200,000s, which is lower than the median in Wooster Square and East Rock.

School choice in New Haven Public Schools

As part of the New Haven Public Schools, students in Fair Haven can either attend the schools they’re zoned for, including Wilbur Cross High School, or apply to others in the district using the district’s school choice program. It's also possible to apply to magnet and out-of-district schools. There are space limitations, though, and acceptance is determined by lottery.

Commuting to Downtown New Haven by car, bus or bike

With Downtown New Haven less than 2 miles away, Fair Haven residents have options to get there or to nearby hotspots like Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital. Grand Avenue takes drivers into downtown’s heart in under 10 minutes, though it can take closer to 15 minutes during peak travel times. Those who don’t drive rely on buses, which have stops throughout the neighborhood, or biking. “You can literally walk there, too,” Hill says. “But it’s a longer 20-minute walk, I’d say.” For longer trips, there’s easy access to Interstate 91 and U.S. Route 5 on the neighborhood’s north end.

Dining and essentials along Grand Avenue and Front Street

Located on the Quinnipiac River, Fair Haven Oyster Company is one of New Haven’s most recognizable restaurants. “It’s a really high-end restaurant directly on the water with an excellent chef, who’s really one of the best chefs in all of Connecticut,” Hill says. The Farm Belly is a newer restaurant on the water that Hill says is getting a lot of attention. The waterfront isn’t home to Fair Haven’s main drag, though. That honor goes to Grand Avenue, which is lined with banks, a post office, a library and most of Fair Haven’s other local restaurants. Other restaurants in the area include spots like:

  • Cositas Deliciosas
  • El Coqui Restaurant
  • Wah-Chun Chinese Restaurant
  • Armada Brewing
  • Apicella's Bakery

Fair Haven offers easy access to waterfront activities and yacht clubs

As a peninsula, Fair Haven offers plenty of waterfront access. Dover Beach hugs the bank of the Quinnipiac River, offering a playground, a splash pad and a boat ramp where residents can launch boats onto the river. Avid boaters can join the Waucoma Yacht Club, and many residents enjoy kayaking and fishing. Fair Haven is close enough to New Haven Harbor to have a mixture of fresh and salt water, so anglers catch bluefish and striped bass. Across town, Criscuolo Park has basketball courts, a playground and a softball field on the banks of the Mill River.

I believe that in my community it is not difficult to find a job if you are well qualified or not. It all how you present yourself and how you communicate. I personally don't have a difficult time looking for employment because I know that networking is an essential part of searching for a employment. I know in the area I live in the it very common that people start with a low level job and work their way up and/ or they utilize the programs in the area that assist with job placement and training. The job market in this area is good but not great, it all depends on what the person is looking for.

The people in my area are perhaps not the fitness type of people there are a few people who are fit but its because they don't associate with the other people in the town and keep to themselves and exercise all the time to keep themselves busy.

There is not much attraction in the area there is just nice people that you can talk to time to time. In this area there is not much to do because is just a small town in a way and people keep to themselves or things they like to do outside like play basketball or football; at the end most people most of the time are to their own devices if i may say.
