Long-time residents and outdoor recreation 10 miles from Minneapolis

In the wintertime, when Minnesotans can expect single-digit and some sub-zero days, ice skaters lace up at the Lions Park rink. The park, which anchors the New Hope neighborhood bearing the same name, is within walking distance of dozens—if not hundreds—of mid-century homes. New Hope neighborhoods grew exponentially throughout the 1960s, part of a nationwide movement toward the suburbs. According to Beth Kramer, communications coordinator for the City of New Hope, part of the neighborhood's appeal is that residents tend to stay in the area. “There are so many people that have lived in town for 40-plus years. Some people have lived here for their entire lives.” Along with public parks, grocery and restaurants are also within a mile, and Minneapolis is less than 10 miles—about 15 minutes—away, making the neighborhood a popular home base for commuters. “More families are moving in,” says Kramer, “It’s neat to see how people in different neighborhoods and of different generations connect.”

Mid-century homes and the scattered-site housing program

In Lions Park, prospective buyers will find mid-century ranch-style and split-level houses ranging in price from around $300,000 to $500,000. Kramer explains New Hope has implemented a scattered-site housing program, and there are several new builds throughout the neighborhood. “[The program] helps identify homes that are falling into disrepair, and the city partners to purchase that home, and we work with a developer to build a new one,” she says. Since Lions Park is fully developed, Kramer says the program “offers families the ability to stay within the community while expanding their homes.” Streets are quiet, and decades-old trees shade uniform, quarter-acre lots. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is consistent with national averages.

Grocery shopping, thrifting and restaurants off 42nd Avenue

Lions Park is a primarily residential area, and the majority of shopping and dining is concentrated along 42nd Avenue to the north and—to a lesser extent—36th Avenue to the south. Residents can pick up groceries at Hy-Vee or visit Unique Thift and Dollar Tree in Winnetka Shopping Center. Nearby dining options include Applebee’s and Pub 42 for family dinners or the McDonald’s drive-thru for quick lunches. There are also several taco joints and pizza parlors to choose from. On Thursday afternoons throughout the summer, there’s local produce available at the New Hope Farmers Market in the New Hope Church parking lot.

Seasonal ice skating in a namesake park

According to Kramer, most New Hope residents live within walking distance of a public park; Lions Park is no exception. The close-to-nine-acre expanse at the center of the neighborhood features a seasonal outdoor skating rink as well as a playground, baseball fields and paved pathways. When it snows, “The public works crews plow the trails to allow people to get out and walk again,” says Kramer. There are more recreational opportunities at the New Hope YMCA, which has an indoor swimming pool and gymnasium. Kramer also highlights the forested trails in Northwood Park and the recently renovated aquatic center in Civic Center Park, which she calls “the best of the best.” There’s also an outdoor amphitheater known for hosting movie nights, live bands and off-Broadway musical theater throughout the summer.

Commutes to Minneapolis

Minneapolis is less than 10 miles from the neighborhood via Highway 100 and Interstate 394.“We’re right next to a big city, but it still feels like a small town,” says Kramer, adding that it’s “so easy” to commute. Most drive, but there are also public bus stops along 36th Avenue, part of the Metro Transit system. The nearest major airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International, which is about 20 miles from Lions Park, and there’s top-rated medical care 10 minutes away at Robbinsdale Hospital.
