Adjacent to the Faubourg Marigny, New Orleans’ 7th Ward is a vibrant, historic area in the process of significant change. Jermaine Bossier, Big Chief of the 7th Ward Creole Hunters and half of the musical duo the 79rs Gang, says the increase in Airbnb-style rentals has accelerated the shrinking of Creole culture in the 7th Ward. “What you don’t have much of is the old mom-and-pop ballrooms,” Bossier says, referencing locally-owned social venues where community members once gathered for music and dance. “The neighborhood I grew up in, it’s not the 7th Ward anymore. But it’s the people that keep a culture going.” Embodying this change, many of 7th Ward’s shotgun and Creole-style cottages, though still bedecked in brightly colored exteriors hinting at the area’s Caribbean influence and Black Masking Indian tradition, now come with newly renovated and fully furnished interiors.

Caribbean-style homes in a wide range of prices
“The 7th Ward and the Treme area have a lot of Creoles,” Bossier says. With its incredibly diverse roots, Creole culture has given the area’s buildings an eclectic livelihood unseen elsewhere. Creole cottages and shotgun houses dominate the landscape — many dating back to the 1800s. Often painted in vibrant Caribbean colors, the homes here range from bright blues and yellows to pale purples and pinks. While two and three-bedroom shotgun homes needing the most work can be found for less than $100,000, fully restored five to seven-bedroom French Colonials reach as high as $900,000 in the southernmost part of the neighborhood, which residents refer to as “Fronta Town.”

Mardi Gras Indians
“The Masking Indian tradition in 7th Ward started with the Batiste Family,” Bossier says. “And I was fortunate enough to grow up with them.” Originating sometime around the mid-nineteenth century, Black Masking Indians are tribes of Black Americans who pay homage to the Indigenous who aided enslaved Africans brought to America. “The respect we were taught to have for the culture, I love that. I had a real childhood in the 7th Ward thanks to its masking culture,” says Bossier. Black Masking Indians traditionally made public appearances only during Mardi Gras, but have begun attending other festivals in recent years, including Jazzfest. Preparing for these celebrations, creating the suits and learning the performances often takes a longtime dedication, which Bossier says encourages discipline in 7th Ward youth. “Mardi Gras Indians helped save my life, and in 2010 I helped start a program that masked kids, got them off the street and taught them how to sow. I feel good about that.”
Cars, streetcars and bikes
The buses and streetcars of the city connect 7th Ward to the city’s other neighborhoods, but the city is known for its walkability. “In New Orleans, you can walk wherever you wanna go,” Bossier says. “If you have a bike, you’re good. You can get anywhere.” Highway access is also easy, with Interstates 10 and 610 running through the neighborhood.

Homer Plessy Community School and International High
For pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, students in 7th Ward can attend Homer Plessy Community School, which earns an A-minus on Niche. For high school, students can attend International High School of New Orleans. International High School is the city's only school with an International Baccalaureate program, offers language classes like Arabic and Chinese and earns a C-plus.
Homer Plessy Community School serves Pre-K to 8th grade.

Local Creole spots that bring together everyone
With a particularly Creole flavor, 7th Ward has plenty of local bars and restaurants to offer. Bullet’s Sports Bar brings in an eclectic mix of people and serves up Creole-inspired fare like their BBQ Shrimp or Chargrilled Oysters with Spinach Dip. “Steak night, seafood night, they got all kinds of stuff. And all kinds of people,” Bossier says. For a quick pick-me-up after a night out in 7th Ward, Pagoda Café on N Dorgenois St offers breakfast tacos, homemade pastries and locally roasted coffee. Residents looking to cook can find what they need at small shops like Brooks Grocery & Deli on Allen St. For larger chain stores, residents will have to head three miles northeast on I-10 to get to the area’s Walmart Supercenter.

Small parks like Hardin and easy access to City Park
Though less than two miles from the city’s largest park, New Orleans City Park, 7th Ward has a few smaller community parks. Hardin Park offers a playground and basketball courts and serves as a meeting ground for the community’s Black Masking Indians. Alexander Pierre Tureaud Civil Rights Memorial Park was built to honor the prominent civil rights activist and lawyer and features a statue of Tureaud with benches for viewing.
Hardin Playground is central to the local community.

I have been living here for almost 5 years and I love the area. It is the pinnacle of New Orleans living. Safety could be an issue at times but I wouldn't trade it for any other neighborhood.

People tend to live in my community for a very good time . We've had our casual move ins and out but for the most part out community is very subtle. It's also quite peacefully regardless of the business street.
