Dillard
Suburban Neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana
Orleans Parish 70122
Modern homes mixed in with older homes
Homes in the Dillard neighborhood range from those built in the 1920s to new, modern construction. The most common styles are raised cottages, post-World War II ranch houses, and mid-century modern homes. They’re usually built on 35-45 foot wide lots and have two-to-three bedrooms and two baths. Most homes have off-street parking available and well-kept yards. Home prices start at $130,000 for smaller homes in need of repair and nearly reach $500,000 for larger, fully restored homes.University athletics without many parties
The university has a variety of sports like basketball, cross country and volleyball, so there are plenty of opportunities for residents to catch a game. Homecoming takes place each fall, bringing together current students and former alum to celebrate the university and the work of its scholars. While there are Mardi Gras celebrations, Campbell says the school is not known for being too wild. “Students will have a few parties, but it’s not a college that really parties. Students usually go to a different school for that.”Shops and restaurants mostly in nearby neighborhoods
On Paris Avenue, Williby’s Catfish offers meals developed around the catfish raised on the restaurant’s family farm. Slightly north, the neighborhood’s closest grocery store is Canseco’s Filmore Market on Filmore Avenue. Less than two miles east on Chef Menteur Highway, residents can shop at Walmart, the clothing store RePlay, Shoe Department and other outlets.Cemeteries and City Park
For green space, this university neighborhood is somewhat lacking. Ahavas Sholem Cemetery offers a macabre but grass-covered space to walk around, but for larger spaces with more amenities, residents will have to travel to nearby City Park, which also houses the Louisiana Children's Museum and the City Park Disc Golf Course.City transit and major highways
Bus and streetcar stops can be found along surrounding Paris Ave and Gentilly Blvd, making travel to the rest of the city easy. There are also sidewalks lining most of the streets, and the more prominent streets are wide enough to bike, though they mostly lack a dedicated bike lane. Two major interstates, I-610 and I-10 are easily accessible via many of the area’s gridded streets or larger avenues.School support from surrounding areas
For families with children in the neighborhood, Mary Bethune supports the area with pre-kindergarten through 8th grade classes and hands-on science and computer labs. The school earns a C-plus on Niche. Students can also attend nearby Warren Easton Senior High School, which earns a C-plus. The mainstay of the neighborhood, Dillard University, is a historically Black university founded in 1930. The university partners with the Ross University School of Medicine in Florida to encourage students to study medicine in effort to add to the number of Black physicians in the United States.
