Hollygrove
Neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana
Orleans Parish 70118

Cottages, shotgun homes, and no major hotels
The neighborhood where musicians Lil Wayne and Ledisi grew up consists primarily of single-story designs like cottage-style and shotgun homes, and scarce are the bright Caribbean colors that characterize homes throughout many other parts of the city. Because of the area’s lowlands, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 damaged many of the homes here. They have since been fully renovated or replaced my new builds. “Some of the renovations are 20 years old at this point, so they need updates,” says Woody Koppel, real estate broker with Valmont Realtors. “But that work wouldn’t be as extensive as it would be for homes in other areas of the city.” Hollygrove homes, Koppel says, are well-built and often great choices for first-time homebuyers. Smaller homes start at around $70,000 and sell as high as $170,000, while homes with more than 1,200 square feet sell between $190,000 and $425,000.Jazz Fest at the Fair Grounds
Hollygrove is just 4 miles southwest of the New Orleans Fair Grounds, home of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The festival is a week and a half celebration of jazz and New Orleans' contribution to music. Located along the upper edge of Hollygrove’s boundaries is the Longue Vue House and Gardens, a historic house and museum that offers regular events like yoga classes and garden volunteer days. The home sits on 8 acres of land and is open to the public for daily tours Monday through Saturday. In addition to the house, the grounds have a small alley of oak trees and a children’s interactive discovery garden. From Big Macs to Papa Tom’s Shrimp & Grits
Though primarily residential, the area’s commercial district along Carrollton Avenue offers national chains like Dollar General and Foot Locker. Cosco is along Palmetto Street to the north, and South Claiborne Avenue is home to Lowe's and Robert Fresh Market Uptown. Jp Superette on Eagle Street and DG Market on Earhart Boulevard are nearby for groceries. Within its commercial corridor is a range of restaurants from McDonald’s to Ye Olde College Inn, a local staple serving Creole-inspired shrimp remoulade and Papa Tom’s shrimp & grits. However, coffee is in short supply, with PJ’s Coffee being the neighborhood’s only coffee shop.Playgrounds and arts in the park
Conrad Playground is the only park within the community, but several more, such as Lincoln Park, are found just outside the neighborhood. Conrad Playground offers a fenced area for baseball and basketball, while Lincoln Park has a football stadium and play equipment for smaller children. “And right around the corner, we have Marsalis Park,” Gunni says. “That’s where they have the Arts Market every month.”Sidewalks and easy interstate access
With S Claiborne Avenue, Airline Drive and I-10 framing the neighborhood, Hollygrove drivers can connect to other parts of the city, such as LCMC Health Center, 4 miles east, and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, about 12 miles west. US-90 runs southeast to downtown New Orleans, just over 4 miles away. Though many homes lack dedicated driveways, plenty of street parking is available throughout the area. Sidewalks line the neighborhood's gridded streets, making the area walkable. Public transportation is limited to the neighborhood's outskirts, with bus stops along the major roads.Support from nearby public schools
Students can attend pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at Mary Bethune Elementary, a charter school that earns a C-plus on Niche and offers hands-on science instruction and computer labs. They can then continue on to C-plus-rated Warren Easton Senior High School. Stuart Hall School is an all-boys private school option for students of Hollygrove and surrounding communities. Stuart Hall students can join one of their many sports teams or sing in the school choir. Some risk from flooding in the future
Data from the website First Street indicate more than 99% of properties in Hollygrove are at risk of damage from flooding within the next 30 years. The greatest risk is to properties like roads, infrastructure and public structures like schools. Data indicate residential and commercial properties are at minor risk.
