Fenced lawns and varied architecture define Lakewood housing
One of the first things you might notice about the homes of Lakewood is how different they all are. Built primarily in the 1940s, or between 1960 and 1980, the homes don’t reflect the usual New Orleans styles. For instance, there are no shotgun houses in the area. But there are cottages, mansions, ranch-style houses, historic properties and even a few contemporary houses. Smaller homes can cost between $435,000 and $700,000, while larger houses typically sell in the $800,000 to $2.5 million range. Lots in Lakewood are generous, with some reaching a half-acre in size. Off-street parking is a given here, as are tidy, fenced lawns.
Lakewood's homes come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have unique designs and details.
Second Empire architecture and mansard roofs can be found across Lakewood.

Marble tombs and garden paths highlight this historic neighborhood
The neighborhood is home to Metairie Cemetery. This burial ground is one of the most photographed in the Big Easy thanks to its large collection of marble tombs and funeral statuary. Conveniently located at the end of the Canal Streetcar line, the cemetery was founded in 1872 on what had been the Metairie Racecourse grounds.
Another popular attraction is the Longue Vue Historic House and Gardens. Constructed around 1940, the house is one of the last Country Place Era homes built in the nation. Strolling the eight acres of grounds, you’ll find 14 garden areas along with 22 fountains and ponds. The woman-designed gardens are well known for their large variety of flowers and how unique each area is. In addition to tennis courts, there is a yellow garden, a goldfish pond, azalea walk and a portico garden amongst many others. Blooms are on display year-round, and tours are available. Should you get hungry while exploring the house and grounds, Longue Vue also offers refreshments by way of Edith and Edgar’s Museum Café. Located in the Gate House, the eatery serves coffee, tea, and handmade goodies. Try a Lavender Iced Coffee while enjoying the view over the Oak Lawn.
Years of planning and design go into the mausoleums of Lakewood's Metairie Cemetery.
Lakewood's furry friends are also laid to rest in Metairie Cemetery thanks to Heaven's Pets.
