An authentic picture of New Orleans' rebirth
Rebirth. It’s a word that has defined New Orleans in the two decades following its worst natural disaster. And if one were to create a poster of places that embody that rebirth, the St. Claude neighborhood belongs on it. Though the neighborhood has not yet regained its pre-Katrina population of nearly 12,000 residents, it is very much on the rebound – as of 2022, there were 2,300 more people living in St. Claude than in 2010. Why the upswing? Because this is a neighborhood that is retaining some sense of New Orleans authenticity even as gentrification encroaches. “There’s a lot more tourist activity here than there was a decade ago, but it’s definitely a local hangout space,” says artist Kate Kuen, a St. Claude resident.
Saint Claude is just minutes from Interstates 10 and 610.

St. Claude Avenue a local arts mecca
St. Claude Avenue gives this neighborhood its name – and its spirit. “If the things you like are art, you have top-tier performing art, culinary art and visual art,” Kuen says. Many of the bars in the neighborhood have a stage for live performances ranging from music to comedy to drag and burlesque shows. Saturn Bar – a cosmic-themed dive with mid-century neon décor featuring an eclectic rotation of live performances – encapsulates the spirit of the neighborhood. Food options are as diverse as New Orleans itself. Jamaican Jerk House and Rosalita’s Backyard Tacos are local favorites. And few eateries capture the spirit better than Morrow’s, a Black-owned restaurant serving both classic New Orleans cuisine and traditional Korean dishes.

Colorful, historic homes a St. Claude trademark
Along with neighboring Bywater, St. Claude is part of the Bywater Historical District. Many of the homes here must meet city regulations to preserve and protect their historic and cultural significance. These homes come in an array of styles that helped make New Orleans architecture ubiquitous and world-famous. There’s a mix of colorful Creole cottages plus a variety of shotguns – single, double and camelbacks. "They don't have restrictions on how you paint and decorate your houses,” Kuen says. “They have these beautiful homes that are neon pink, lime green, and every color under the sun.” Houses range from $165,000-$650,000, with a median price of $235,000. For those looking to build something newer, there are also a multitude of lots in the neighborhood in the mid-$30,000-$90,000 range.

Bunny Friend Playground entering its second century
The lone park in St. Claude, Bunny Friend Playground, commemorates its 100th year of existence in 2024. Donated to the city by a family paying tribute to their late son, Henry “Bunny” Friend, the park has a playground, baseball diamond, basketball courts, and a youth football field. Six-time Major League Baseball All-Star Rusty Staub is among the many who have played Little League baseball here. The Ellis Marsalis Center for Music and Musicians' Village are located just a few blocks from the playground.

A very Chewy Mardi Gras
Like any New Orleans neighborhood, St. Claude is a festive place to be during Mardi Gras season. The Krewe of Chewbaucchus parade begins here before heading through the Marigny neighborhood towards the French Quarter. As the Star Wars-inspired name suggests, the parade has a sci-fi flavor, but there’s also a unique twist: None of the floats are powered by internal combustion engines.
