Living in Tall Timbers offers residents the unique opportunity to be in one of the newest subdivisions on the Westbank while remaining mere minutes from historic Old Algiers and Gretna. Founded in the 1970s, Tall Timbers is a suburban haven just 20 minutes' drive from downtown New Orleans. The neighborhood has abundant curb appeal as well as friendly people to greet you each day. Strolling around in the evening to see neighbors is commonplace although you’ll want a car for running other errands. The residential community is made up of more than 550 homes along with restaurants, grocery stores, banks and a library. But its people are what make it special. Community spirit is strong here, and several homeowner’s associations, an active garden club and a bird sanctuary thrive here thanks to volunteers and members.

“Tall Timbers is well-established. It’s quiet and has a great reputation. The homes are well-maintained, and there are no Airbnb or rentals in the area. It’s on the Westbank, but it’s still easy to get to the rest of the city,” says Melissa McClendon, co-owner of the Nola Home Realty Group.

Tall Timbers is filled with traditional architecture. Everything from Colonial Revivals to French Provincial to Tudors and Cape Cods can be found in the streets surrounding the area’s centralized green space, Brechtel Park. The subdivision was designed to have gently winding roadways, mature landscaping and sizeable yards. Many homes are fenced, and most have garages so parking is rarely a problem. Prices range from $73,000 for a one-bedroom and bath condo to $500,000 for a four-bedroom, three-bath multi-level new construction.

Students in the area have a number of schools to choose from. Both Einstein Charter School at Village de l’Est and Dwight D. Eisenhower Charter serve students from prekindergarten through eighth grade. At Einstein Charter, every child is given an individualized lesson plan to cater to that student’s learning needs. Eisenhower Charter was named as one of the Outstanding Schools in Greater New Orleans by the Louisiana Department of Education and has an active Parent Teacher Organization. Warren Easton High School has been teaching students for nearly 200 years and is a National Blue Ribbon school. It not only has multiple athletic teams but also an expansive extracurricular program including a robotics club and several honor societies.

One of New Orleans’ largest nature parks is located in Tall Timbers. Brechtel Park was created in 1971 and covers 110 acres. Bordered by a dense hardwood forest, the space can feel secluded in the best of ways. A large lagoon system runs through the area with a central 14-acre pond, and Scout Island can be reached by following a simple wooden bridge to the public art installations housed there.

Lakewood Golf Club offers players of every skill level the chance to enjoy 18 championship holes in the heart of Algiers. The Ron Garl-designed course opened in 1961 and has become one of the top practice facilities in the New Orleans area. It’s a daily fee facility although traditional memberships are available, too. The club is famous for its Junior Golfer program which holds weekly clinics and annual summer camps.

When it comes time to eat, one of the most popular spots in Tall Timbers is the Olive Branch Café. This gourmet pizzeria uses fine Italian olive oils and Spanish olives for authentic tastes of the Old World and maintains exceptional quality by making the dough fresh in-house each day. Open seven days a week, the eatery also serves oven-baked subs, cannolis, manicotti, and spicy Cajun redfish.

The Tall Timbers neighborhood of Algiers welcomes residents to the community with traditional architecture, active civic clubs and ample green space.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
