Historic homes and modern updates
Like many of New Orleans' earliest faubourgs, Tremé offers a rainbow-like menagerie of architecture rarely found outside of the Big Easy. In particular, the neighborhood's assortment of Creole cottages, shotgun doubles, Craftsman-style bungalows and townhouses imbue the area with character and history. But according to Walther, "A lot of Tremé is being completely renovated." Some new builds and renovations maintain the neighborhood's original look. Others are unconcerned with the past, leading to streets with stark contrast between picturesque cottages and sleek modernist structures. Because of the variety, prices vary quite a bit and are usually affected by location and square footage. Most single-family homes in Tremé sell for between $250,000 to $575,000, but some do reach above $1 million.Buskers and Broadway in Louis Armstrong Park
Louis Armstrong Park is the main anchor for Tremé and is steeped in contentious history involving city planning and Mardi Gras parades. Rife with sculptures of local legends and footbridges spanning small ponds, the tree-lined square has been a prime hotspot for jazz performances since it was built in the 1960s. Visitors can also partake in indoor activities nearby, such as basketball matchups and lap swims at the Tremé Recreation Community Center, or a Broadway show at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts. The best teachers in Louisiana
Students in Tremé typically begin their education at one of the charter schools in or around Tremé. Many choose to attend the C-minus rated Phyllis Wheatley Community School for grades K-5. For middle school, many attend the Homer Plessy Community School, which has an A-minus Niche score and has the best public school teachers in Louisiana. For high school, students typically attend the Morris Jeff Community School, which has a B-plus Niche score and offers class sizes below the national average of 17 students per teacher.Spaces for history and culture
The southern corner of Louis Armstrong Park, known as Congo Square, is where most of Tremé's popular events occur. Art markets, no-cost jazz performances and meetups for walking tours happen almost daily in this fabled square that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Congo Square is also where the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival originally took place, which today occurs a few blocks up Esplanade Avenue at the Fair Grounds Race Course.Bike rentals and streetcars
The Lafitte Greenway and streetcar lines extend west of the neighborhood. These, as well as bus routes, offer multiple alternatives for trips across the city. Those who do not own a bike can still use the greenway by renting a Blue Bike from one of the multiple stations around Tremé. For longer commutes, Interstate 10 passes right over the neighborhood.Creole classics and nearby nightlife
If seeking nightlife, Tremé is "maybe a 3-minute walk to the French Quarter," says Walther. But not every local spends their evenings there. "The French Quarter is very much our apple. I love to go down there for like a Sunday fun-day, but we get there by noon and are out by 4pm," says Walther. If looking to dodge Bourbon Street, Tremé has plenty of its own businesses to try. Baked goods and espressos from cafes like the Tremé Coffeehouse are how many locals begin their day. There are also several long-standing Creole eateries to visit, such as L'il Dizzy's Cafe, which serves highly rated gumbo. For groceries, a Whole Foods Market location can be found on Broad Street.Things to consider
"Tremé is a historic neighborhood overseen by the Historic District Landmarks Commission," says Walther. This means home maintenance projects can be easier said than done. "Any exterior facade renovation has to be permitted and passed through the HDLC to keep the neighborhood's historical integrity." Crime is also a concern to some residents, with all types of violent and property crime having CAP Index scores above the national average of 4.
