An established community on the West Bank
Whitney is an established Algiers neighborhood with a lot of of new development. It's located on the West Bank and is just 5 miles east of New Orleans' Central Business District and 7 miles east of the French Quarter. “It's a great place for people who want to experience the things that make New Orleans great without having to deal with the noise,” says Cody Stringer, a realtor with Reve Realtors who has sold more than 50 homes in the neighborhood over the past five years. Chief among this growing neighborhoods' advantages is a variety of transportation routes, but it's also a prime location for accessing many of the city's major cultural celebrations.

Modern shotguns, French Colonials and craftsman
Despite the area being over 300 years old, most of the homes in the neighborhood are new builds. When a fire swept the area in 1985, it forced the community to rebuild. While homes slowly popped up years after the fire, this community has seen a rapid increase in developments over the past decade. “There’s quite a bit of new, really good developments,” Stringer says. Staying true to the famous New Orleans architectural style, the most common houses are double shotguns, French Colonial duplexes, and Craftsmans. Most homes are painted bright beach tones, which pair well with these eclectic New Orleans architectural styles. Roads are wide enough to accommodate street parking, but many houses on wider lots have driveways leading to detached garages. Most homes are separated by just a few feet. The homes in Whitney are designed to withstand flooding, often built on stilts or raised platforms. Smaller houses in need of some TLC sell between $65,000 and $150,000, while move-in-ready options range from $200,000 to $600,000.

Known as the largest public event in Algiers and the only holiday bonfire in New Orleans, this free event features live music, food from local vendors, and shopping from local artisans. There’s also the annual Algiers Mardi Gras Festival, which celebrates carnival season and all its traditions. Starting at the intersection of Lamarques Street and L. B. Landry, this celebration features floats to promote local music, food and New Orleans culture. Shopping at Oakwood Center
Whitney residents head south to Westbank and Terry Parkway to shop at Oakwood Center, a mall in the adjacent neighborhood of Terrytown. For fresh meat, produce and other household essentials, there's a Rouses Market located in Terrytown. River Fine Foods is a local favorite that sells groceries and hot food, including their signature po-boy and fried chicken. Dozens of restaurants and cafes can also be found in Algiers Point, just west of Whitney. Dry Dock Café, Crown & Anchor English Pub and Congregation Coffee Roasters are just a few popular spots.
Walking and biking along the levee
Stringer says that many residents spend time walking and biking along the levee, enjoying the view of the Mississippi River, and soaking in the Louisiana sun. Although Whitney does not have any parks within its boundaries, Delcazal Park is a half-mile walk from the neighborhood. Located in the adjacent neighborhood of Behrman, the Morris FX Jeff Sr. Park offers a playground, as well as a football field, track, and green spaces for soccer.

Flood concerns and highway noise
Whitney has an elevated risk for flooding, according to Flood Factor. This has largely been an issue for many years, so most homes are built to withstand the effects of flash flooding, but homeowners should still ensure they have a solid, reliable flood insurance policy. Residents closest to the Crescent City Connection also deal with elevated noise pollution.
