Twin Cities metro town with Czech heritage
Settled by immigrants from Bohemia, New Prague, Minnesota, was named after the capital of the Czech Republic. The city honors its heritage through the annual Dozinky Festival and its preservation of properties like the Broz Hotel, a late 19th-century landmark crafted with Czechoslovakian designs. Straddling Scott and Le Sueur counties, this small town community on the far reaches of the Twin Cities metro equally embraces history and progressivism. “I think one of the most interesting things is it’s steeped in Czechoslovakian ancestry,” says City Council Member Maggie Bass. “If the kids go off to college, they generally find themselves back here in New Prague. It’s that kind of community where it’s family based, and the school system is good. There are so many parks in our city, and city council is all about keeping that small town feel while providing amenities, as well.”
New Prague is a quiet town that is home to about 8,200 residents.

A mix of 20th century, new Traditionals and Craftsmen
With many built between the mid-20th century and today, the houses include ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, modern Traditionals and Craftsmen. Housing continues to expand, too, with one new development bringing another 150 homes in the city.
Most homes cost between $250,000 and $700,000, and the city’s median price of roughly $395,000 falls slightly below the national median. By contrast, the median prices in Saint Paul and Minneapolis are $325,000 and $331,000, respectively.
New Prague's newer developments feature mostly split level home designs.

Coffee, comfort foods and watering holes on Main Street
Main Street anchors the historic downtown and acts as the dividing line between Scott and Le Sueur counties. Preserved buildings, many of which date back to the 19th century, house shops, bars and eateries. Walkers in this area will find merchandise like clothes, cigars, quilting material and flowers. Eateries range from cafes and bakeries — one of which makes Czech pastries — to restaurants serving Chinese takeout and American comfort food.
While the city has a few chain grocers, the community has pushed back against some big box brands. “Most constituents I talk to don’t want a big box here. But big box is not far away,” Bass says. “They want to keep that small town feel and keep dollars with local businesses.”

Greenway Park’s relaxing getaway
New Park’s parks range from a small downtown plaza with tables and benches to a fenced and off-leash dog park. Featuring a tower built as a nod to Czech entrance gates, Greenway Park is one of the city’s destinations for relaxing walks and views. The park’s trails also add to the city's few miles of walking and biking paths. Other recreational attractions include a skate park, a public 18-hole golf course and an aquatic center with one of the largest pools in Minnesota.

Celebrating Czech culture
The Broz Hotel — now an event venue — and the Church of St. Wenceslaus pay homage to the area’s historic Czech culture. The church, a Neoclassical and Romanesque institution, drew inspiration from another house of worship in Prague and shares its name with the country’s famous patron saint.
In September, massive crowds take over the downtown for the annual Dozinky Festival. The celebration features vendors, a classic car show, street dancing and a farm-themed parade.
