Suburban New Jersey neighborhood with amenities galore and easy access to the big city
About 30 miles west of New York sits New Providence, a suburban, New Jersey neighborhood that offers so much. Besides the top-rated school system, residents gravitate to this small town because of its wide range of housing prices. Homebuyers can nab a home at a lower price here than in neighboring train neighborhoods Summit and Chatham. Despite the lower prices, residents of New Providence still have access to an easy commute. They can have a hassle-free commute thanks to two local train stations. “Most people who move here love the community feel,” Meg Mullin, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, says. “New Providence has a lot of town pride. People are very friendly, community-minded and want to help each other out. It’s also one of those towns that offers something for everyone. It’s very desirable.”
New Providence was initially known as turkey town because of the abundance of the wildfowl.

1950s and 60s split levels, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes
In New Providence, many New Providence homes date back to the 1950s and 1960s and sit on luscious and fairly spacious lots. These homes, mainly split-levels, Cape Cods and ranch styles, sprouted up when Bell Labs moved its headquarters into the Murray Hill section of the neighborhood. These homes have sold for as low as $420,000 for a Cape Cod needing renovations and up to $1.4 million for a fully renovated split-level with additions. New Providence also boasts a collection of larger colonial and new-traditional homes that sold for between $750,000 and $2.3 million. As for getting around, some New Providence streets have sidewalks, but it is more of a car-dependent community as it was given a 30 out of 100 Walk Score. New Providence is known as a safe community as the CAP Index gave the neighborhood a Crime Score of 2 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average.
