Oceanfront condos to multiple million-dollar mansions
New Smyrna Beach provides most people’s dream of living at the beach. The area has multiple oceanfront condos, giving picturesque water views and easy access to the beach. Tucked off the main thoroughfares of tourist traffic are tight neighborhood streets with multiple ranch homes that vary in tropical tones. Respectably sized lots feature front yards highlighted with local shrubbery and palm trees. Buyers can expect a two-bedroom condo on the ocean to sell for under $690,000, while a three-bedroom ranch will cost about $770,000. There is also the chance to buy lavish oceanfront homes that scale well into the multi-million-dollar range. “The market is very hot right now, and properties are moving quickly. Sometimes buyers are looking for vacation homes, but many people live their whole lives in New Smyrna Beach,” Lynn says. The town’s CAP Index Crime Score ranks significantly lower than the national average. New Smyrna Beach scores a 1-out-of-10 compared to the national average of 4-out-of-10.Spending the day on the water
Most outdoor recreation centers around being on or around the water. Residents can spend a relaxing beach day at multiple public beaches, including Flagler Avenue Beachfront Park, where beachgoers can drive their car on the beach and set up camp. Smyrna Dunes Park is another beach access point but is known for its 20 miles of boardwalk that is accessible for all, offers scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian River and Ponce de Leon Inlet and fishing spots. 27th Avenue Park offers 3.4 acres along the Atlantic Ocean and a playground for children while their parents can watch one of the beach cabanas. “There is a lot of boating, and people love being near the water,” Lynn says.Path through Volusia County Schools
New Smyrna Beach is part of Volusia County Schools, which scores a B on Niche and serves almost 64,000 students. Students will attend Coronado Beach Elementary, which scores a B, advance to New Smyrna Beach Middle, a B-minus-rated school, and earn their diplomas from New Smyrna Beach High School. The high school grades a B and offers four academies – medical, engineering, criminal justice and education – to bolster students' core education.Events on Flagler Avenue and multiple museums
Fittingly enough, Flagler Avenue is the epicenter for events in the area, including its monthly Wine Walk, a wine-tasting tour that moves up and down the avenue. Other monthly events take place along Canal Street, which includes a Sip and Stroll and an annual car show. Maybe a bit surprising for a beach town is a prominent art scene with multiple galleries, the non-profit Atlantic Center for the Arts, which is a residency for artists and museums, such as the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum and the New Smyrna Museum of History.NSB Flex bus line
Volusia County’s public transportation offers Votran offers the NSB Flex program in New Smyrna Beach and neighboring Edgewater. The call-first door-to-door service is flexible, with limited time stops in both places. Commuters can also use United States Route 1, which runs right through the heart of the city on its way from Maine to Key West, Fla. Both Interstates 4 and 95 are within a few miles of the town.Strolling Flagler Avenue
Stretching just five blocks, Flagler Avenue is almost the makeshift downtown area of New Smyrna Beach, with numerous restaurants and boutiques and offers the town’s nightlife. Tourists and locals shop the clothing boutique Looked Charm and grab a meal or drink on the second-floor open-air patio at Crabby’s Bar and Grill. Another bustling spot is 3rd Avenue, which features popular restaurants The Garlic, which offers an entirely open-air restaurant with a rustic Italian feel, and Norwoods, which offers views of the intercoastal waterway and is modeled like a treehouse. The corridor is also home to the Indian River Village Shopping Center, where locals can pick up weekly necessities from Publix.Living on the Florida coast
There are some inherent environmental risks living on the Florida coast. New Smyrna Beach has scored 9 of 10 in extreme heat and 10 of 10 in extreme wind. With its location on the water, the area is also susceptible to hurricanes and was hit by Hurricane Nicole.
