Woodmere is a suburban neighborhood on the outskirts of Newark

The quiet streets of Woodmere, a bedroom community in northern Delaware, belie its proximity to much of what the area has to offer. Just a few miles east of the suburban neighborhood, Newark’s Main Street is flanked by storefronts and restaurants close to the University of Delaware. “Some people move to the area to be away from Philadelphia, but still want to have some type of downtown style of life,” says Jonathan Edler, a Realtor at Keller Williams Empower Real Estate. “They can go to Main Street and walk the local restaurants, but can also take the train all the way up into Philadelphia.” That access and convenience is what draws homebuyers to Woodmere, where single-family homes and tree-lined sidewalks are a quick drive from Delaware’s tax-free shopping.

Suburban homes line Woodmere streets

Several looping, residential roads wind through Woodmere, bounded by sidewalks, trees and grassy front lawns. “There are really nice houses in that area,” Edler says. “The price points are nice for single-family homes, and people can find a good array of ranch-style homes. Properties in the Newark area do not sit on the market long and are very coveted.” Split-levels and colonial-style homes are also common in the neighborhood. Prices typically fall between $400,000 and $500,000. Woodmere has a CAP Crime Index score of 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Main Street is a hub of shopping and dining

Most Woodmere residents head around 2 miles east to Main Street for retail shops and restaurants. “You can park and walk up and down Main Street,” Edler says. “It’s a huge hub and about a mile long with restaurants, bars and storefronts on both sides. The big local favorites are Klondike Kate’s Restaurant & Saloon, Iron Hill Brewery, Grotto Pizza and Deer Park Tavern.” Other stops include Home Grown Café, The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille and Claymont Steak Shop. “There’s an array of different flavors there, from pizza to fine dining,” Edler says. “Main Street is getting bigger.” The Christiana Mall, with more than 100 stores, is less than 15 miles from Woodmere. An ACME Markets is about 3 miles east.

The Christina School District serves Woodmere students

Kids begin at John R. Downes Elementary School, which receives a B-plus rating from Niche. Shue-Medill Middle School garners a C-plus, while Newark High School gets a B-minus. Newark High also offers a variety of clubs and extracurricular programs for students, including Science Olympiad, a crocheting club and The Buzz, which focuses on creating assorted forms of media. All three schools are part of the Christina School District. The main campus of the University of Delaware is about 2 miles east of Woodmere.

Northern Delaware green spaces with baseball fields

Woodmere is close to community parks and other recreation. Just east, the Newark Country Club is private and offers a large, 18-hole course, a pool, dining and events to members. Norma B. Handloff Park and Leroy C. Hill, Jr. Park both have baseball diamonds. “There are a bunch of town parks and local baseball fields,” Edler says. “Baseball is big in Newark. There are also a lot of walking and biking trails in the Newark Area – people are always walking the trails there.” The Christina Valley Stream Trail, also known as the Mason Dixon Trail, and the Rittenhouse Trail also run through the community. Anglers can cast lines in the Christina River.

Driving around northern Delaware or to Philadelphia

There is no public transportation within Woodmere, but DART buses run along Main Street close by. “Main Street is a hub for people to be able to get in and out of Newark,” Edler says. “Woodmere isn’t far from Interstate 95 or Route 1, so you can take 95 all the way up to Philly or west to Maryland.” Philadelphia is about 50 miles away via I-95, while central Wilmington is under 20 miles east. On-ramps to the highway are about 5 miles south of central Woodmere. Newark’s Amtrak station is just over 2 miles away. Newark Urgent Care sits less than 4 miles from Woodmere. ChristianaCare Christiana Hospital is about 10 miles away.

Events along Main Street in Newark

Main Street is also a hub of local events. “They shut it down for events like marathons, walk-a-thons and fundraisers, as well as car shows, which Newark is known for,” Edler says. “You have a Memorial Day parade and Liberty Day and Fireworks, which is a big draw, and then you have the Summer Main Street Festival and National Night Out.” The community comes together for events like the Main Street Mile, where participants can run, walk or otherwise down the thoroughfare. University of Delaware football games, as well as other Fightin’ Blue Hens sporting events, draw spectators. “The Bob Carpenter Center has all kinds of local events and sporting teams come through there,” Edler says. “Football is huge.”
