North Broadway's multi-family rowhouses start in the $500,000s
While apartments and condos make up most of the neighborhood’s available properties, a small chunk of multi-family rowhouses remain. These homes were either built in the early 20th century or demolished and rebuilt in the 21st century as renter-focused properties. Houses range from three to 10 bedrooms and typically sell for $500,000 to $800,000. Two-bedroom condos in the neighborhood usually go for $200,000 to $400,000.Indoor and outdoor sports facilities at The Waterfront
Along the Passaic River, The Waterfront recreation center has indoor basketball courts, a gym and outdoor soccer fields. Hendricks Field Golf Course is an 18-hole facility just north of the neighborhood. Nearby is also Branch Brook Park, a 360-acre green space with a 5-mile looping trail, sports facilities and a playground. Newark locals also visit the park in the spring to see the thousands of Cherry Blossom trees bloom. “With the American Dream Mall open, we now have that indoor option nearby as well,” says Davidson. The mall is the largest in the United States and features a water and amusement park, shopping, dining and the only indoor ski slopes in the country.Arts and humanities academy at Barringer High
Students may start at Elliott Street Elementary, which gets a C-minus from Niche, for kindergarten through eighth grade. Barringer High also has a C-minus and serves as the arts and humanities academy for the Newark School District. The Newark School of Fashion & Design, located in the neighborhood along Woodside Avenue, is an alternative high school offered by the city. Just south of North Broadway is also the Technology High School, a magnet academy offered by the city.Cherry Blossom Festival in Essex County
In April, the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival is held at Branch Brook Park. In addition to celebrating the park’s blooms, the event features live music and a crafter’s marketplace. There are also events throughout the year in Newark, including art festivals and cultural celebrations.Commuting to NYC
North Broadway is a highly walkable and bikeable neighborhood because of its urban streetscape. There’s a range of public transportation nearby, including bus stops along Broadway and the Broad Street train station 2 miles west. Commuters can take the train to Hoboken station, which offers access to New York City’s metro system. Driving into the city, residents can take McCarter Highway to either the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel. “When my husband drives into the city for work, he tries to get onto the tunnel early to get that lower off-peak rate,” says Davidson. Newark Liberty International, the closest airport, is 6 miles south. Clara Maass Medical Center, the closest hospital, is just over a mile west.Local bodegas and restaurants like Taino’s Kitchen
There’s a Dollar General along Broadway. Melo Deli Grocery, a local bodega, has a deli and sells pre-packaged goods. In the north end of the neighborhood, Taino’s Kitchen is popular for Puerto Rican dishes. Just south of the area, Borinquen Bakery has been a Jersey staple for over 80 years. There’s also Lidl and ShopRite 2 miles north in Belleville.
