Between Portland and Willamette Valley wine country
Newberg, a city of about 26,000, is easily accessible to Portland, even though it has embraced the identity of the surrounding Willamette Valley with countless wineries and annual flower festivals. “You can still get to the city fairly easily,” says Tina Smith, a real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Professional Group and a Certified Negotiation Expert who’s lived in Newberg for five years and serves on the Newberg Downtown Coalition Board. “We like that we can still get in to meet up with people, go to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) or the art museum.” The city is also home to George Fox University—a major employer—and a healthy manufacturing industry. A-Dec, which produces dental operatory equipment, is a major player.

Original and contemporary Craftsman homes in Newberg
Newberg’s housing market embraces the old and the new. Historic bungalows from the first three decades of the 20th century line the gridded streets that surround downtown. New traditional homes with Craftsman influences and contemporary new constructions sit along the curving streets of the city’s outskirts. The median home sales price in Newberg is almost $500,000, which is similar to that of nearby McMinnville. However, Newberg’s median is higher than the national median, which lies around $404,400, and homes tend to spend about 15 days longer on the local market than they do nationwide.

Newberg-Dundee Public Schools include six elementary schools, two middle schools and one traditional high school, which serve over 4,000 students together. The district earns an overall B grade from Niche and offers a dual language program in Spanish at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Students at Newberg High School, which receives a B-minus, can earn industry certifications, work experience credits and internship experience through its career and technical education programs, which include performing arts, digital arts, engineering technology and health sciences.

Gateway to Willamette Valley wine country
Wine-tasting rooms, boutiques, local restaurants and galleries sit near each other on First Street, which locals know as downtown Newberg. Every first Friday of the month, these local businesses extend their hours, host local artists and musicians and even offer refreshments for the city’s First Friday Artwalk. While shopping and dining may be largely concentrated downtown, Newberg's notable wine scene extends much farther. “I say it’s the ‘gateway to wine country’” Smith says. The larger area is home to more than 100 wineries within a 10-mile radius.

The center also hosts the Willamette Valley Lavender Festival and Plein Air Art Show, with lavender products and juried art and craft booths as the focus of the event. Other attractions include the 99W Drive-In Theatre, which has been family-owned since 1953, and the childhood home of President Herbert Hoover.

Water skiing and salmon fishing at Rogers Landing
The Chehalem Parks and Recreation District maintains 25 green spaces between Newberg and Dundee, including Ewing Young Park, which has an off-leash dog area, a skatepark, a disc golf course and one of few nationally certified BMX tracks. Chehalem Glenn Golf Course—an 18-hole public course with expansive greens and meandering trails—is part of the district, too. Rogers Landing County Park, known among the water skiing and salmon fishing communities, sits where the Willamette River brushes against the city. One of the stops on the 187-mile Willamette River Water Trail that stretches from Corvallis to Wilsonville, the park has a three-lane boat launch and parking.
