Lake Sebasticook and commuting convenience

Situated between major roads and Lake Sebasticook, the small town of Newport offers both commuting convenience and access to the water just a short walk away from early 1900s Maine homes. The town has a long history as part of the Maine Central Railroad and as a popular summertime spot for families to enjoy the lake. It remains a serene place even though a major interstate is just a short distance from the town center. Everything is just a short walk or drive from home, from dining and recreation to established schools that serve eight towns in the area. “Newport is a crossroad, which means you can start in seven different places all around, and they all join up in Newport,” says Sherri Hanson, the designated broker at Trundy & Co., and a Newport resident for over 50 years. “You are about an hour and a half from everything you could want in Maine.”

Major roads just outside of downtown Newport

This crossroads town has access to Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 2, allowing for quick trips to several nearby towns and cities, as well as convenient commuting. “Newport became a transit town because one spouse can work in Bangor, and the other can work in Watertown,” Hanson says. The town itself is quite walkable, with sidewalk-lined streets and paths along the Sebasticook river and lake. Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital is less than 6 miles to the west in Pittsfield, and the Bangor International Airport is 29 miles to the east.

Parks, beaches and trails along Sebasticook Lake

Sebasticook Lake, sometimes called Newport Lake, has several public greenspaces and campsites along its shores, and it’s the largest single-municipality lake in the state of Maine. Just a short walk away is Riverwalk Park, which features waterfront pathways. Hanson says that the town puts a lot of effort into the park’s maintenance and upkeep. For fun away from the water, Witham Park, once part of the old elementary school, is now a standalone park that’s home to a softball field, a playset and tennis courts.

Older shaded Cape Cods and ranch-style homes

Houses in Newport were typically constructed in the early to mid-1900s, with some being built as early as the 1880s. Cape Cod, ranch-style and New Englander homes, which are common in Central Maine, make up a majority of the housing market. Many residences sport lawns shaded by local red maple and balsam fir trees. Home prices generally range between $150,000 and $375,000.

Eateries along U.S. Route 2

Newport has a number of restaurants just a short walk or drive away, most of which sit along Route 2. Angler’s serves classic Maine seafood in a bright and cheery setting. For fajitas and margaritas, Cervesas Southwest Grill has homemade Mexican cuisine that is owned by a local family. Hanson also noted that there are lots of pizza and Chinese spots in town. Residents can also find larger chain restaurants, like Dunkin' and McDonald's, around the local Hannaford on the west side of town.

Riverwalk festivals and snowmobile events

The largest event in Newport is the annual Riverwalk Festival and Parade, which takes place at the beginning of August and offers activities for all ages, from beer tents and talent shows to craft fairs. There's also an annual Snowmobile Ride-In Weekend to support Pine Tree Camp, a camp in nearby Rome for children and adults with physical or developmental disorders. Participants can enjoy a spaghetti dinner and the ride-in auction, but the main attraction is the Egg Ride and Poker Run, where local celebrities place raw eggs inside their snowsuits and then race each other on snowmobiles while trying to not crack the eggs inside.
