Northside live near work and beach fun

Bordered by the Naval Station Norfolk and Ocean View Beach lies Northside, a well-established community of military members and beachgoers. “Lots of people move to Northside to be close to the base, but there are also long long-term residents who live there to be close to the beach without having to deal with all the tourist traffic,” says Kelly DeLucia, a Realtor with Keller Williams who has over 12 years of real estate experience. Residents have quick access to shopping in the south, beach fun to the east and work to the west.

“I moved from Massachusetts to an apartment here. I fell in love with the area and moved to my home near that apartment. You can get big properties with big lawns or smaller lawns for less maintenance. Everyone on my street has been here for over 10 years, and we all know each other,” says Barb Hays, a long-time resident and owner of Windhound Photography.

I-64 leads to base and downtown Norfolk

Locals who need to report to Naval Station Norfolk or get to work in downtown Norfolk take Interstate 64. Hampton Roads Transit buses run along Granby Street and Tidewater Street for those who can walk from their homes to the stop and wait for a ride. Granby Street also features a bike lane, giving cyclists a roughly 10-minute route to Ocean View Beach Park.

Walking, biking and skating through Northside Park

Northside Park has 62 acres of land to explore. Kids can climb around the playground equipment while older visitors ride down the mountain bike trails. Others practice their kick flips at the skate park or cool off in the indoor pool. “Northside Park is wonderful for walking dogs,” Hays says. “That area has done great things for the neighborhood.” For more air-conditioned fun, residents drive less than 2 miles north to visit the Ocean View Station Museum within the Norfolk Public Library. Northside also rests 2 miles from public parking at Ocean View Beach, making it easy to spend the day lounging on the sand and watching the water roll in. “People come from all over to visit Ocean View Beach. It's a hot spot for tourists during and after Spring Break,” DeLucia says.

Living in older Cape Cods or new Craftsman homes

Northside residents live in Craftsman and Cape Cod-style homes built in the 1920s, 1940s and early 2000s. “Some people move here to buy a home with really great architecture and renovate it. There’s also a decent amount of rental properties,” DeLucia says. A little more than half of the locals here own homes with three or four bedrooms, moderate yards and wide paved driveways. Many homes feature attached garages, but it’s also common for residents to use their driveways for uncovered parking. A recently renovated Cape Cod-style home or an older ranch home can sell for $250,000 to $350,000, while newer Craftsman houses can sell for $400,000 to almost $500,000.

Granby High welcomes military families and students

Parents send their kids to learn at Mary Calcott Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche. Those living in the area's eastern half fall into the C-rated Oceanair Elementary School area. Students throughout Northside transition to Northside Middle School, a Designated Purple Star school that supports military-connected students and families and gets a B-plus. Granby High, a B-minus school, was one of the first schools in Virginia to receive the Purple Star Designation.

Celebrating local civic leagues and St. Patrick's Day

The annual Norfolk Neighborhood Expo & U.P.L.I.F.T. Awards event is at Northside Park. The expo highlights and celebrates Norfolk’s diverse neighborhoods by recognizing local civic leagues and community groups for their dedication to creating meaningful change in their communities. Northside also gets busy every March for the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Over 60,000 people dressed in green gather at Northside Middle to see a parade of floats, cars and clowns march down Granby Street.

Hearing activity at the naval base

Being close to the Naval Sation Norfolk means occasionally hearing plane noise, nicknamed “the sound of freedom” by locals. “There aren’t a lot of fighter jets like you see in Virginia Beach, but you definitely hear satellite planes and helicopters from the base. It happens maybe once a week and not very late at night. I love it; it doesn’t bother me one bit,” Hays says.

El Rey Taqueria serves up lunch

Hays recommends the family-owned El Rey Taqueria for authentic Mexican dishes. Most order their tacos with handmade corn tortillas to go when getting lunch. For dinner and a view, some take a trip up to the Ocean View Fishing Pier. Customers can order seafood dishes and specialty cocktails while looking out across the Chesapeake Bay water. For everyday needs, locals head south on Tidewater Drive to the Food Lion or Walmart Supercenter in the Little Creek Marketplace, or they visit the Harris Teeter off Interstate 64.
