Norris was made for comfortable living
In the 1930s, the Tennessee Valley Authority set out to create a town for its workers that would be the “American ideal.” And the result is the self-contained, walkable community of Norris. Located 20 miles north of Knoxville, Norris stays relatively unchanged today. Locals here still stroll to the library, public schools, shops and eateries; gather at Norris Commons grassy area for social events; and the greenbelt encircling the town remains, providing a buffer from the busy outside world. “It’s slow-paced. Even the speed limits are slow, like 15 or 20 miles per hour. It’s very laid back,” says Beth Pyne, a Realtor with Realtor Executive Associates, who has lived in the area for over 20 years. “There’s always something going on, though. There are farmer’s markets and festivals. They show little movies. It’s a very family-oriented town.”
Clapboard cottages surrounded by maple trees
Those looking to move to Norris will find a wealth of 1930s wooden clapboard cottages. They typically hover around 1,000 square feet and rest on large lots with mature oaks and maples that are common to the area. The average list price rests in the mid-$300,000 range. “Most homes have been renovated,” Pyne says. “They sell pretty fast. They’re gone within a couple of weeks.”
Historic Wooden Clapboard homes are plentiful in the Norris neighborhood.
Newer Craftsman style homes can be found along the southern side of Norris.
Norris homes sit on smaller lots, which allows for the town to remain walkable for everyone.

The park features a swimming pool and public marina, where guests can rent paddleboards, kayaks, and pontoon boats. “It’s beautiful here. We have a mountain-like setting. We have the river and Norris Lake — the largest, deepest lake in the South,” Pyne says. “Pretty much anything you want to do outdoors, you can do right here.”
