The growing community of North Hobbs
North Hobbs is a growing community next to the New Mexico-Texas state border, part of the larger Hobbs area in Lea County. Originally settled for its rich oil supplies, North Hobbs is now a site of residential and commercial development. "Our employment is strong, between manufacturing and hospitals, so our market has stayed steady," says Cassandra Rosa, a Hobbs local and Realtor with MVMT Real Estate. "North Hobbs is where all the growth is going. Not just homes, but new retail plazas, community centers, things like that." Some of the area's most well-known sites are located here, from the University of the Southwest to the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. North Hobbs displays much of this area's personality.
Midcentury homes, new construction and custom properties
Wide, quiet roads and vistas of the New Mexico desert make up the daily view for North Hobbs residents. Homes are outlined by gravel driveways and native shrubbery, and the architecture is a mix of midcentury ranch styles and modern New Traditional structures. "North Hobbs is a hot spot for new buyers; most of our new construction is going up there just because there's so much land," Rosa says. "We're reaching the end of our planned supply, so homes are flying off the market. It's easy to find something that's move-in ready for just a little above our median price." The median sales price for single-family homes in North Hobbs is about $300,000. Price is largely dictated by how new a home is, if it's had extensive renovations and the number of acres.
Fishing, golfing and indoor swimming in North Hobbs
Most of the area's green spaces are clustered on the west side, with anglers heading to Green Meadow Park for its large pond, stocked with catfish and trout. It also has an expansive playground and several covered picnic areas to shelter from the hot New Mexico sun. Just a few miles from Green Meadow Park, the Rockwind Community Links welcomes golfers of all skill levels to its championship 18-hole course, 9-hole par-3 course and short game area. The facility is operated by the city of Hobbs and is open to the public; a network of walking paths and fields surrounds the links. "The Center of Recreation facility is really important for new residents to know about. Not just for fitness, because it does have an amazing pool and gym, but they're always holding all-ages activities," Rosa says. "It's a great way to get to know people."
Nearby schools and dual enrollment with CTECH
North Hobbs falls under Hobbs Municipal Schools, and New Mexico offers school choice. Most kids living in North Hobbs will attend College Lane Elementary School, which receives a B on Niche. They can move on to Houston Middle School, which gets a B-plus, before progressing to C-plus-rated Hobbs High School. High schoolers can enter dual enrollment at the Career and Technical Education Center of Hobbs, exploring career paths such as culinary arts, architecture and more through experiential learning.
Specialty shops and restaurants downtown, large chains on the south side
Several plazas lining the community's south side are filled with retailers, fast-casual food chains and big-box stores such as Walmart Supercenter and The Home Depot. Dal Paso Street, a main road that runs through the center of the area, travels 5 miles directly to the heart of downtown Hobbs. While small, central downtown is where residents can find specialty shops and locally owned restaurants, from the organized displays at IL Cicerone High Fashion Apparel to the classic American comfort food at Casey's Restaurant.
Community-driven events and gatherings in North Hobbs
In North Hobbs and the Hobbs area as a whole, the community powers all events and gatherings. "I think it's special how much community outreach and volunteer-based organized events we have. There's always something going on," Rosa says. "A lot of people in the community will use the Lea County Event Center up in North Hobbs for things like craft markets and charity auctions." The Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame has rotating exhibits year-round and hosts different events, from a weekly film screening to guest lectures.
Quick commuting and nearby healthcare
The area is bordered by state Road 18 and U.S. Route 62, primary roads that run north-south and east-west, respectively. North Hobbs has limited access to public transportation, with buses only stopping at select areas such as the University of the Southwest, so many residents are car-dependent. On the community's west side is Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital.
